Something like a phenomena.

He’s not sure when it began, actually, or how. He’s not sure when he had stopped viewing her as a diversion - a temporary source of amusement and something closer to a vessel, those children he came to in their dying dreams. She was not, however, something broken that he had decided, on a whim and maybe because he happened to need it at the moment, to fix. She was her own person, with her own story, her own path.

She wasn’t someone he could mold into his image, or set free into a garden full of nothing but things that he wanted her to see.

It should have irritated him. It should have pushed him, after the first taste of fun, on to the next best thrill. Instead, he’s watching for her image on the split screens of his PDA, listening for her voice on the speakers. He’s nicking tiny, feminine things from stores and houses, to bring to her room. He’s talking about matters that he talks about to no one else but Chrome; he’s watching her as she traipses/skips just a few steps ahead of him down the street. He’s teaching her things about what it means to be a monster with a human face; he’s holding her hand as she skips a step at a time down the stairs, or balances on a railway.

He’s smiling as they converse, and it isn’t because it’s just something that he does. It’s because he wants to.

Rokudo Mukuro could tell himself that all of these things are tiny little nothings, controlled by little else beyond the moment and the knowledge that after the fact, he’ll walk away and won’t even spare it a second glance. For all her viciousness and all her charm, Rhode Kamelot is a little girl, and little girls are a dime a dozen in each and every world that he’s been to. Mukuro, though, knows the truth of it - he’s reminded of it every time he finds himself studying the shift of light in Rhode’s eyes, the fragile beauty of her fingers or the softness of her hair against his skin. And as a creature so intimately acquainted with the cycle of life, death and karma, he knows better than to deny what is only meant to be.
