Hero-myths and Legends of the British Race (Part 1)

This is a book dating from 1910, by Maud Isabel Ebbutt (1867-?). It's a collection of folktales, ranging from the more familiar, like Roland, to some lesser known ones (to me, at least), like William of Cloudslee. The book can be found on PG here. There were 52 images in total, so rather than overwhelm anyone by posting them all at one go, I'll split them into bits.

The first was a decorative doodad, featuring a skinny man with a big beard and an even bigger horn....

And so we carry on with a Frontispiece from a tale from the Robin Hood legend.

Next up is Beowulf. Oooh, scary monster! A bit of haughty declaiming. "Good grief, I do believe ... it's a head!" Check out those tasteful onesies! :D And a dramatic demise.

Next is The Dream of Maxen Wledig, featuring an obviously gripping game of chess.

The tale of Constantine and Elene follows, with Elene apparently stuck for finding a solution to some sort of giant floor puzzle:

Then we have the story of the Compassion of Constantine, who appears to be setting up the world's largest cup of tea:

Now we have the tale of Havelok the Dane, first seen as a small boy having bumped his head. Later he practises his rugby tackles. While later again, the the stunned populace finds out that the sun shines out of his ... errrr ... shoulder.

So there we go - the first set of images. Part 2 to follow soon-ish....
