Though seasons did not pass on the island the way they did at home, it was nearly October, and Thom felt almost certain that she could feel a certain hint of fall in the air. A full year had passed since she'd come to the island, nearly to the day, and it was stunning to think how much her life had changed in the twelve intervening months. If she could have done one thing, it would have been to go back to the sad, frightened, lonely girl she had been on her first evening here, and show her how well things were destined to turn out, and how quickly, too.
She was startled out of her reverie by a noise in the jungle, some distance to their left. Thom stepped a little closer to Henri on the path, not sure even as she did it why. The second island was perfectly safe, by all accounts; islanders had been making trips over for more than a year without incident, and any bodies that might have been discovered here initially had long since been laid to rest. Still, between the abandoned village and the ruins, there was no question that it was an eerie sort of place, and Thom was quite content to keep Henri within easy reach.
"I hear there's a very pretty lagoon on the north side of the island," she said, attempting to shake off the moment's discomfort that the unexpected noise had brought with it. "Perhaps we might investigate, a little later."
