Apparently Mrs. Solarez also listens to NPR on the way to school before first period, so we celebrated National Poetry Month in English today. Starting with William Carlos Williams and his plums. So here's what I learned how to do:
You wanted
the last piece
of vegan pizza
but I got there
first
You are
vegan
I am not
I am sorry
especially since
it had no
cheese
I think it's a brilliant immitation.
Then she read us poems by one of her former students and told us to write poems in our own voices...
"It's National Poetry Month!"
And here we are,
Writing poetry;
Forced,
With thoughts of a girl,
Dead 17 years ago this May
And only alive the 17 before,
For inspiration.
Will our poems be funny -
Flippant, even?
Will they be serious?
Or just...
Forced.
So there, Mrs. Solarez.
... And now back to my essay.
