SAT scores availible this morning... and I got 760 Math, 690 Reading Comprehension, 760 Writing (80 out of 80 on the grammar and 8 out of 12 on the essay... but I'm telling myself that I would have done better there if they had actually read it). That leaves me with a 2210, making Kris and I SAT score buddies (though Alan got a 2260... grr, him - ( Read more... )

Yeah, the SAT Writing was/is ridiculous. I read a study book for the SAT II version, and the example essay that was supposed to score 12/12 SUCKED. It started with, "I most certainly agree with the statement that..." I wrote something similar to that on an AP US History essay once, and the paper came back dripping with red ink. My SAT II essay, which I thought I wrote well (I thought it was AP-level, and I did get a 5 on AP English Language), didn't score as high as I thought it would. I can't remember the exact score, but it was probably 8ish. I missed more on the grammar section though--I think I got something like 710 on writing. But hey, it all worked out--I'm going to college and I'll probably never think about that stupid essay again in my life.

On a related note, my AP English Lit teacher this year decided to try grading the SAT writing tests. He quit after the first round of grading because he couldn't stand the terrible writing and the whole computer system thing was annoying and difficult to use, apparently. haha.

Ah hah, Mrs. Stone would have such a fit if we wrote essays like that! Though my papers to her come back covered in comments (though usually I think she uses green), mostly "Why?," anyway, and I think she might even like my essays better than a lot of the others from my class.

But then, I suppose SAT essay graders like that because they can tell there's a thesis without even having to read the whole first sentence. I'm told they get about 1 minute to score and grade each paper, so I should have just wrote about something totally unrelated and just made my first and last sentences of each paragraph sound reasonable.

At least I know grammar, even if half my answers in the last hour of that test were just justified in my mind by "because I feel like it."

Yeah, the grading is timed, and it's all on computer, so it keeps track of how quickly you're grading. If you walk away for awhile, this window supposedly turns colors, and pops up with a message telling you to keep focus. My teacher may have been exaggerating though, to emphasize his dislike for the computer system.

That sounds so incredibly annoying. I think I'd be a bum on the streets of Long Beach (or, more likely, a bead scooper for the rest of my life) before being an SAT essay grader.

You had three sections on your SAT? O.o I only had two...
Oh yeah, they changed it, didn't they? I got 1190 on mine when I took it with just Maths/Verbal.

Congrats though. You did really well!

Yup. I'm in the first class to have to take the new one, though since the writing section seemed to help me, that's ok... except that it ended up being a 4 hour test. Then there was the waiting around and checking in.

I guess with just the math and reading comprehension I have a 1450... so yay! And thank you!

Lack of email makes me sad too.
And I didn't get an email from him so he must not have gotten very far on the list.

I'm so glad I never had to take the new SAT.

And I'm probably never taking it again. So there, College Board.

The grammar part totally brought my scores up, though.

It probably would have brought mine up if there'd been a grammar section on the old SAT, too.

My parents seem to think I'm taking it again, so I guess there's a chance they might be right. Damn it.

Yay, grammar, though!

Congrats! ♥

My mom woke me up this morning by waving my scores (scribbled on a post-it note) in my face. I got a 800 in math, 720 in Critical Reading, and 760 (!!!) in Writing (12 on the essay, but I suck in grammar, ha). And so, 2280. My parents generally don't want me to retake it because they're scared I'll get a lower score, but I sort of want to because... well, I didn't study at all for this one, so if I do study then that'd give me a better score? :/

See, the way I see it is that you're not supposed to study for the SAT (I didn't), but that may just be not wanting to take it again. I mean, there's a good 6 hours of my life I'll never get back, if you count the transportation and the waiting around (silly of me to get there on time, really), but then I guess it didn't help that I went to work right after, so I really felt like my day was shot.

My mom seems to think that I should have done better on the Critical Reading, so I think she wants me to take it, again. Blah.

I thought colleges didn't get all your scores - just the ones you ask to be sent. I mean, you have to pay to get extra scores sent.

Anyway, thank you - but you did even better, so congratulations to you! I guess we're going to college, eh?

OMFG IB WORLD LIT ESSAY DUE TOMORROW! But I'm looking at it as a rough draft to be revisted around July, so I'm still somewhat clam... 1000-1500 words... *groan*

Those essays will at least not expect 1000 words, and some will be able to be recycled, right?
