My bro and my future sis-in-law stayed over the apartment this weekend with their two dogs, Lady J and Scarlett, a la GI Joe (for those of us who remember the TV show). I don't really like animals, but I have to learn to like these ones cuz they are my neices.
It's been a nice weekend on Long Island and in Manhattan. I ate at inoteca and drank on the lower east side with my bro, meg, and their pals on Friday. I went to Queens on Saturday to hang out with Filipino WWII vets for an article K is shooting for Hyphen Magazine. I sort of translated, sort of not. The vets kept thinking that K was Korean for some reason, which is odd, cuz most people assume she is Japanese. "It's my wide face!!" K offered as an explanation.
There was one old Manang, the wife of a vet, who was hip to our queerness.
She asked me, "Are you always together?"
Me: "No, not ALWAYS..."
Later, the old lady asks, "Are you together?"
K says, "Yeah, we are."
Old lady: "Do you live together?"
K: "No, not yet."
Old lady: "How nice!" She smiles then kisses us on the cheeck. I wish my mom was that cool. Alas.
