first heard of inkblots back in higshchool. my former school (siena college, taytay) is a regular participant in this seminar and somehow it made me wonder how it is attending a nationwide campus journalism talk for three days. i always read the article about the inkblots seminar every year in our school paper (where i once worked hehehehe..a dream come true for me that time) and i was simply amazed with the story about that seminar.
inkblots was held annually in ust. yes, and i am a thomasian which means i have the opportunity to finally experience this seminar that intrigued me for years which actually took me three years before finally satisfying this curiosity of mine.
day1
arene and i decided to be walk-in applicants(paramg call center and dating hehe) for this year's inkblots and so we have to be a little early in school to assure of the 35 slots. moments later, familiar faces soon stood in front of me:dez, shelly, djhay, grace, alex, shiela, denise, chuchie, and the varsi people:jenny, kristine, and ruben.
i entered the st. thomas auditorium with the song "this is the moment" of eric santos playing in my head (lol) kidding aside, i was really sleepy yet excited as we looked for the perfect place to sit.i was just amazed when i learned that MARIA RESSA, herself, will be the keynote speaker. whoa!she entered the auditorium in her usual black top with a pink blazer and a sweet smile plastered on her face, pressumably an apologetic one because she's late.
what i liked about her is that she looks so confident on-stage. her presence is somehow intimidating because she has this let's-be-serious-with-work-or-else-i-will-fire-you look. she seems so powerful, so in-control of the situation.but more than that, she's very PASSIONATE with her work, which is pretty obvious during her 30minute talk. she kept on telling us the importance of the whys of things , the principle that she applied in abs-cbn news dept., as a foundation of a good story.
after the 30minute break, sir esguerra discussed before the 200+ crowd present in the auditorium news writing and to our surprise, he had a powerpoint presenetation to boast of ehehehe. then we also have the guy from pdi(i forgot the name) which made our stomachs ache because of his funny remarks. he lectured on culture and entertainment writing. the last speaker for that day is ir cuartero. he was a features professor also in ust.
day2
from tarc, inkblots was "relocated" at cfad bldg where i was almost sandwiched because the doors of the elevator wanted to close so badly.
first speaker was a certain ms. glenda(?) the managing editor of newsbreak. her lecture is all about investigative journalism. she pointed out that investigative journalism is a product of initiative journalists who wanted to make something out of nothing (a less popular topic, if not an alien topic for that matter) so that this nothing will soon be the bukam-bibig of the society. actually, i deeply admire investigative journalists because it takes a lot of dedication, time, sacrifice, and effort before actually coming up with eyebrow-raising STORIES(which are based on PURE FACTS due to extensive researching) that will benefit the society in such a way that people will soon discover the skeletons inside the cabinet that the government(most especially), its politicians or its high-ranking officials' been hiding.
after the break we have vim nadero, a former thomasian, who is now READ:director of the up creative writing center.i actually see in him sir atalia, swear!hehehehehe...after lunch, we had our parallel session. we opted for photo journalism and i enjoyed it naman.
day3
campus paper management was discussed by sir lito zulueta, the varsitarian adviser.i barely understood what he's saying probably because i'm too sleepy that i'm having a hard time catching up with him(heck!during the three-day seminar i'm always sleepy!there are moments that i was able to successfully snatch some cat nap during lectures hehe)
after the cmapus paper management talk, we had our sportswriting session with quinito henson!hehehe.the ust tigers have their 15second of fame as they were presented(they were called by their names and position one-by-one) before the crowd as we waited for coach siot tanquincen's arrival. coach siot has humble beginnings, and yes, mr. henson was right when he said that his(tanquincen's) story was inspiring. although he didn't make it as a professional basketball player, there's nothing to be ashamed of especially after giving two championships to the country's most favored barangay ginebra gin kings. coach siot actually looked nice and he's very humble. he's quick to point out that he's not a good player-he's short, has small hands that's why controlling the basketball is very hard, and jumps very low. nevertheless, he still a superstar in his own right that's why everytime i see siot tanquincen on tv, i can't help but admire how humble he is.
ms. charrie villa came next to discuss media ethics. although what she discussed is the ethics that abs news dept. has been following.she's good, though
after that, the panel discussion came next with maam alice villadolid and "shelly's jiggy manicad"(dimaculangan, 2006) hehehe..the topic was about giving licensure exams to media practitioners to eliminate the hao siaos that destroys the image of media men. however the big question here is HOW?how will this licensure exam work?what are the standards?who will determine who should pass or not?and the list of questions goes on...for me, i think we don't need this licensure exam because even licensed doctors, nurses, teachers etc have the tendency to abuse their power right and if licensure exams were given to media practitioners, is there a 100% guarantee that these licensed mediamen will not abuse its power????come to think of it...
*****
i think the most important thing that i learned during the seminar is not to be selfish. i admit that one of my dreams as a journalist is to be able to see my by-line in the headlines of one of the biggest newspaper in the country. but one of the speakers told us that if that would be every journalists' mentality, it is not SERVING THE PEOPLE THAT YOU ARE DOING BUT SERVING YOUR SELF-INTEREST...ouch hehehehe at least now, i know much better.besides it's only ONE of the few dreams that i have as a journalist.
