This weekend is our Gardening/Earth Day/Year of the Frog/Year of the Reef/Recycling/International Migratory Bird Day celebration at the zoo. Yes, we are a small zoo, so we combine several celebrations into one weekend. I had a booth that I manned all day yesterday for the bird migration, and I helped the green team do the recycling table as well. At the recycling table we had huge shopping bags as give-a-ways, so I took one home. They are really big black bags, made from 100% recycled materials. One side has the "Animal Planet" logo, and the other side says "Clorox"-- hehe.
This morning I went grocery shopping armed with my big bag. I do grocery shopping weird. I go every week to get my basics, milk, fruits, veggies, and my precious bottled water (the flavored, carbonated kind that scares Dr. Fi so easily...!). Then every two or three weeks I do a "big shop" and stock up on my pantry items (canned goods, toiletries, etc.) Well, today was a "big shop" day. I figured I would put my water bottles in the big bag.
I HATE the little plastic bags they always give you. I always have tons of them, even though I use them occasionally for doggy doo pick-up. I always have a big wad of them to take to the recycle bin.
Anyway, I walked into Wal-Mart to go shopping, and right at the entrance they had regular tote sized shopping bags. Black, and made from 100% recycled material. Wonderful! And guess how much they were? $1 a piece! Great! So I got a handful of 5. I figured one for fruits and veggies, one for meat and dairy, one for canned goods (you get the idea.)
So I did my shopping, and went up to the register. The lady clipped the tags off and started to fill them for me. I pointed out that she forgot to scan the tags, and she said if you were using them right away, they were free! EXCELLENT!
So no more little plastic baggies... and no more guilt! Yay!
I'm going to clean today, and plant some little plants I got at the zoo yesterday, and have a green weekend. And it's a nice, cool, overcast day so I'll probably take all the dogs to the park again. Have a lovely weekend everyone!
