Yesterday I discovered that my biennial merit review is this year, not next year, and is already late. Which means I have a flurry of really annoying things to do this weekend, as opposed to my usual mountain of mostly interesting things to do

Is the review late because they forgot to schedule it, or because of some omission on your part?

And by "pair of round-trip tickets" do you mean one pair of tickets (one there and and one back) or a pair of there and corresponding pair of back?

(I'm having trouble interpreting simple language today apparently)

Hey Bub,

The review is "late" because I didn't get an e-mail about it until Friday from the secretary, by which time it was already "late". I should have known about it since I got an e-mail from another secretary in January about it (she has since retired). But I rarely remember e-mails from 8 1/2 months ago. My stuff should have been submitted by July 31st, but it's an internal deadline, so not a big deal. And I honestly don't think I deserve a merit advancement, so I wouldn't be disappointed if I don't get it. The new e-mail (which was sent to 6 or so others, so I'm not the only one) only asked that I get my stuff in "ASAP"

I originally wrote "pair of tickets", and meant to go back and edit it to read "round-trip tickets", but mis-edited. You're not having trouble interpreting simple language: I'm having trouble writing simple language.
