1.) Hal Jordan
I don't hate Hal. I mean, I'd actually have to want to have some sort of stake in his character for that to happen. No, I find that I don't *get* why he's back in the DCU. Maybe it's that I miss the days of when Kyle was the torchbearer, John provided guidance, Guy provided booze and tough love, and Alan was the stern father figure. Even after reading the first issue of Rebirth, I failed to grasp what was so important for Hal to return. To reset the status quo in which he, not Kyle, was the bestest GL in the universe? I guess I could believe it if there was something to back that statement up, rather than other characters constantly harping upon his greatness. Because it was the GL reboot that I found I liked Hal, this flawed character who eventually gave in to his rage and frustration and grief. Failing is what made him human, and I can't say I find anything with the current Hal that says the same.
On the bright side though, I'm going to be totally shallow and say he's got a fine bum.
2.) Cons
Normal people have holidays. I have conventions. Truth is, I'm a workaholic who rarely finds the time to do everything I'd like to do. Cons are the only times when I can unwind, and even then I'm taking notes. *sigh*
3.) Power Girl
At last year's SDCC, I kept up a steady stream of Power Girl jokes. Hey, you would too if you saw that lady with the inflatable bosom. Then as I was waiting for Amanda Conner to be free, I picked up a trade of JSA which happened to be centered on Power Girl. I skipped to Amanda's pages and lo and behold, fell completely in love with her rendition of Peeg. Ever since then I've been hopelessly smitten, and have amassed a bit of PG stuff (mini-series, posters, figurines). As I told Jimmy Palmiotti, every month I look forward most to the PG series. Why her? Because Peeg's much more than the boob window. Seriously, if you think she's simply fanservice you're truly missing out: there's a strong, independent woman with a tender side. Karen's had heartbreak, wrestled with her place in her adopted world, and managed to come out of it stronger with a healthy outlook on life. Plus she's a computer programmer with her own company, as well the JSA leader. HBIC.
Yes, yes, let's also go over the costume. I find it pretty funny that after I made my comment about Peeg at the SDCC JSA panel, some 'indie' comic reader complained about Peeg's costume calling the boob window her... hole (my response after she whined about how she, as a new reader, can't take Peeg seriously because of the cleavage: stop off, betch!) Now, Jimmy has said that Amanda will experiment a little with the costume design to be sure. And yeah, by rights any time Peeg throws a punch a boob would pop out. But you know, this is comic book science; that shit stays in. Still, it is problematic for Karen to have that cutout, I agree. But I got over it right quick. Damnit, it's what makes her so iconic for better or worse. In my mind, Peeg is built very much like Alex Ross's interpretation: muscular and defined, not lithe like Supergirl, and it makes sense that she would feel empowered to show off her sexuality and not be strictly defined by it. She can't help that people see her and immediately think, tits! Kinda says more about the reader than the character, huh? And if I can overlook the superficiality, trust me, anyone can.
Anyway, I ask you this: when you were a kid and wanting to be a superhero who did you say you were? If you were a girl, did you say Supergirl or Batgirl? I never wanted to be the girl sidekick; I was always Superman. I didn't care if the boys I played with said girls couldn't be Superman; either I was going to be the strongest superhero or I wasn't. If I had known about Power Girl when I was younger, my pick would have been her every single time.
Slightly related to #1: Peeg and Hal dated. NGL I still shudder when I think of it.
4.) comics
Started off with translated Donald Duck comics, then local versions of Mad magazine, then anything I could get my grubby hands on at the newsagents: Chinese knockoffs of Fist of the North Star, Beano, Tintin, Doraemon, Tagalog-language romantic comics. If it had pictures, I would have begged/borrowed/stolen a copy. At age 8 when walking back to the house, a dog sauntered up and suddenly snapped its jaws around my right side. I tore my eyes away from the comic I was reading, looked down, and screamed. When they finally hauled the dog off me, I cried and went back to reading even as they stitched me up. Yup, I do love me some comics.
5.) Tequila
My holy trinity used to be: Guinness, Vodka, and Champagne. Obviously I have no taste. I'm too much of wimp to drink straight whiskey or bourbon, so tequila is my next stop. Though if anyone wants to buy a round, I'll have a Guinness please.
