First Night

No first night jitters at the Swim Trials.

TWO WORLD RECORDS!!!!!!

3 events swam finals. Mens 400 IM, Mens 400 Free, and Womens 400 IM

Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff both set WRs in their respective IMs.

Hoff was 2 seconds off pace at the half way mark and took back her record by over a second by the end.

Ryan Lochte was 2nd to Phelps and he also swam lower than the previous record.

This may be the meet to watch. Historically it has been difficult for US swimmers to lower records at the Olympics that they have set at the trials.

On the Roster: Phelps, Larsen Jensen, Hoff
Likely on the Roster*: Lochte, Peter Vanderkaay, Elizabeth Bizel

*technically second place doesn't automatically get a spot. However, no second place finisher has ever failed to have a spot on the team. There are 26 spots on the team (each Men's and Women's) There are 13 individual events. The top finishers of each event and the top 4 finishers of the 100 Free and 200 Free are first named to the team (19 people maximum), then the second place finishers are added until the 26 spots are filled. If all the 2nd place finishers are named and there are still spots available, then the 5th and 6th place finishers of the 100 and 200 Free are named.
