Uh oh, I've been slacking off a bit with this whole updating thing... hmm too much schoolwork to do I suppose. ;)
Anyway, this past weekend I attended a concert in Detroit with Hena and Lindsay. We were a little early so they decided to take me on a walking tour of Detroit. Holy shit it was scary! In a way it was pretty funny, making me realize just how Lake Foresty I really am. Honestly it was the most ghetto place I have ever been to in my life, and Lindsay and Hena said that on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being best), this neighboorhood of Detroit would probably be around a 6. A SIX! I thought of the time Ruchira and I were driving through Highwood and she got all nervous and locked the doors because we were "in the ghetto" (haha to all my North Shore peeps who actually get why that's funny!). Naturally Detroit is like a thousand times worse than Highwood, which obviously isn't a bad neighborhood at all. Walking down the empty streets of Detroit gave me chills more than anything. It was very eerie, because the city - or at least that part of it - is like a ghost town. The street was six lanes wide and there were barely any cars traveling on it. We passed very few people on the sidewalks, and the people we did see all seemed rather shady. I have never in my life been a racial minority, and here Lindsay and I were the ONLY white people. We stood out in our dress and mannerisms too. People kept honking and yelling at us, and as we passed a group of people waiting at a bus stop this one guy was like, "You're in the wrong town..." There were empty lots with barbed wire fences around them. There were abandoned buildings with holes in the walls and boarded up windows. The city was dirty too, with litter all over the place and random pools of water coming out of the sidewalk. If only I was a better writer, then I could maybe adequately convey the feeling that this city gave me, but unfortunately I can't... in any case, the concert at the Magic Stick was amazing (we went to go see Ash and The Bravery, for those who might be familiar with these bands), but I just can't shake that image of Detroit.
