Mourning for Gamers

Mar 04, 2008 18:33

I just found out that Gary Gygax, creator of Dungeons and Dragons, was found dead today. Most people just considered him some uber geek, and yes he was at time a raging egotist. Yet he can be seen as the father of the modern role playing game genre. Most of the modern gaming industry is found on the products that he helped developed.

For some of us, it was more than just a game. It was a way for us to interact with people who shared a common interest. For some it changed our lives. For me, D&D was the first game I ever played. It set in a motion a life long love of gaming that exists to this day. It also shaped my life in various ways. With out it I would have not met my ex-wife, or those who today I count as my best friends. While people might make comments of a gamer life style, and lord I have met the stereo types in flesh, I am not alone with how my life was shaped by meeting of different people at thees games .

Rest in Peace, good sir.
