It was a day too early to be a joke, unfortunately. Here's a snippet from the interview:
BOB GARFIELD: "The main character’s name is Abdul, a Saudi dentistry student who is obsessed with blowing up the Golden Gate Bridge. Can you see, Rex, how that might not be all that amusing to the residents of San Francisco, or Saudi Arabia, for that matter?"
REX VAN OMMERAN: "[LAUGHS] Well, Bob, actually all the characters are named Abdul. It’s kind of a running joke of the show and in the opening episode, the Mullah commands “Abdul, your bomb belt,” and everybody springs up to grab their explosives, and they all knock heads. “Abdul, your bomb belt.” [LAUGHS] Every sixth-grader in America will be saying it. I guarantee it."
Wow. Just... wow.

Because I remember in the sixth grade, going up to my friend Marco, patting him on the back and saying "Man, you're a little wet, you gonna dry yourself off anytime soon?" Or how about Ricky; I used to ask him what kind of dental plan the Crips gave him. Or Max for that matter, since there's a parallel being drawn. I remember loudly announcing I'd be giving him wide berth any time we were baking anything in Home Ec. That was always good for a laugh. *sigh*... Good times.
But hey, not to worry, not to worry; Good ol' Rex assures us that he has no intention of ridiculing anyone's religion. And later on he can comment on the road conditions during his trip to hell.
