My birthday was great and lovely, spent with folks closest to me, having small adventures and telling stories.
I was born during the first airing of the Star Trek episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" (December 29, 1967) - ten minutes before the episode ends, as Kirk is standing under that hatch with tribbles falling all over him. You might say this stamped me as a geek from the outset. Now it's my 40th birthday, and the 40th anniversary of that episode. To celebrate we went to the Museum of Television and Radio to watch it. Such fun! We also watched early Popeye shorts that brought back lots of childhood memories.
Then we went to the Merchant's House Museum
http://www.merchantshouse.com/index.html, NYC's oldest preserved family home which dates back to 1832, complete with original furnishings and personal possessions. It's supposed to be the most haunted house in NYC, but we saw no ghosts. (Though the docent showed me two photographs taken in front of one of the fireplaces that show the same unexplained glowing column of light.) The kitchen was especially beautiful to me; ancient cutting board, elaborate call bells for the maids, pump connected via pipe to a 60 foot deep cistern under the garden.
Next was mac & cheese dinner at a mac & cheese-only restaurant. (Comfort food was king today!) The food was amazing, but the service was pretty terrible. We had a long wait for a table, another to order, and a half-hour wait before we were served. On top of that they ran out of utensils!
Following that we had a luxurious (and somewhat raucous) dessert back in Brooklyn at The Chocolate Room
http://www.thechocolateroombrooklyn.com/1home/cafe.php This place is just wonderful. I got a great and loving round of "Happy Birthday" before I went home and talked to my mother. (I was born at 9:50 PM on 12/29/67, so every year on my birthday I call her at 9:50 PM.) She sent me a sweet card offering her love and support, and telling me she misses me. I really miss her, too, and I'm glad she's visiting us in March.
Thanks to Telurian for making it possible, and to
mulberryfields and
twotoedsloth for sharing it with me.
Love to all x 40 *
