...and let me say, with absolute certainty though it pains me so, if my next computer can't be packaged with WinXP, I'm buying a Mac*
And yes, Apple's no saint with DRM themselves, but as of yet Macs don't have a user agreement that lets them degrade your video quality, shut off access to unauthorized hardware or uninstall programs that the OS company deems bad without your knowledge or consent.
I'm actually an adherent to legal software - all of my software is open source, freeware or legally purchased. That being said, I'm not paying money to finance a rather scary precedent. For a quick, non-technical summary of the surface points, see
http://www.thestar.com/Business/article/175801 but that article doesn't go nearly far enough in what Vista can do. Have a look at
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html for a lot more that's outlined in the Vista spec.
Basically, with Vista, your computer belongs to Microsoft, and they're letting you pay for the privillege of running some programs on it, maybe.
We now return to regular posting of inconsequential crap.
*unless Adobe releases Photoshop for a *nix platform, that is.
