It had been a good night out. She and her friends had partied on the beach until well past midnight, and then she and Logan had wandered further down the beach and done a little partying of their own. The sun was coming up by the time Logan had dropped her off and shaking herself free of sand, she opened the front door of her house to head up to her room. She'd get a quick shower before going out again to meet Veronica for coffee.
Celeste was standing just inside the door. "Where have you been all night?" she demanded in an icy tone.
Well, that was not the sight or sound that she wanted to be greeted by first thing on a beautiful morning. Lilly gave her a look. "Out with friends at the beach."
"Lillian, this behavior is unacceptable," Celeste said. "Your father and I have told you repeatedly that we will not condone this attitude. I'm afraid we shall have to take drastic measures."
Lilly sighed. "Oh please, Mother Dearest, it's not like I was doing drugs or sleeping with the football team. I was at the beach." In the back of her mind was the thought that Celeste wouldn't know how to take drastic matters about anything without a very detailed instruction manual.
"Go to your room and pack your belongings," Celeste instructed. "You are leaving this afternoon. You will not shame this family and you will learn discipline. I didn't want to have to do this, but you've given me no choice."
"You can't just ship me off like a dress that is two sizes too small for you and you don't want to admit to it, Celeste," Lilly snapped back. She needed to get away from the presence of Celeste and find Duncan. He'd help her talk sense into their father.
Celeste gave a long-suffering sigh. "Your father and I have pre-enrolled you in a school in Louisiana where you will learn to respect your family and yourself. Your flight is booked for this evening, so I suggest you get packing."
"You're sending me to a Bayou school?! Celeste, you cannot do this to me! My friends are here. My boyfriend is here! DUNCAN is here."
"Duncan doesn't give us the trouble that you give us," Celeste said. "And, please, I am your mother. Give me the respect I deserve."
"Respect is earned, Mother, not deserved just because of who you are." She was so angry she had clenched her fists at her sides. "You cannot just tear me away from my life and send me into hiding somewhere because you think I might cast a blemish on your society profile."
Celeste levelled her gaze at Lilly. "I can and I am going to. You run wild with that Echolls boy, you stay out all night drinking and doing god knows what else. Nothing your father or I say gets through to you. We will not allow you to ruin your life."
"You wouldn't know wild if it bit you on your perfectly shaped..." Lilly took a deep breath. "I am not ruining my life, but I can guarantee you that by sending me away like this, you're just asking for payback, Mother." Lilly glared at her one more time and ran up to her room, slamming the door behind her.
