I can't say I understand what is going on among even half of the people here. Even if I were a proper folklorist, I would have been studying Japanese folklore and - from what I can tell - almost everyone here seems to be taking cues from Wester folklore

You'd be surprised. While the apartments themselves seem to be based off of the tales [I used to read with my best friends] my grandmother told me, what's happening... It sounds more like something out of Western stories.

I certainly haven't been acquainted with their versions at least.

I haven't really read many Western stories. Are they all so... strange? Because whatever is happening here is really weird, and I've seen some strange stuff before.

If they're like Japanese folklore, then there's normally a moral reason behind it. As for how odd it is... Fiction is unique like that. And this place just takes it to a new extreme.
