It has been a while since Clint was assigned a mission to be someone’s bodyguard. Years, even, if he thinks about it long enough. The last one had been a two week stint in Istanbul where he shepherded some of SHIELD’s heavy hitters through what was shaping up to be civil unrest. They’d all made it out alive but complained about his mouth and his inability to pander to their needs. He’d replied that he was there to keep them alive and not fetch water or whores.

Fury had reassigned him not long after that.

But Phil had been the one to pick him for the current assignment, and he imagined it was going to be quite a bit different from shuttling diplomats through a warzone. First there wasn’t anything that looked like an end to this assignment. Which always made them Clint’s favorites. And he was guarding a business woman. None other than Virginia “Pepper” Potts, newly appointed CEO of Stark Industries and long time assistant to Tony Stark himself. Tony Stark who Natasha was currently shadowing in her very delightful Natalie get up. Clint couldn’t really help the smirk when he thought about it. Because the idea of Nat in business clothes and skirts and playing nice with a playboy billionaire was one that made him chuckle almost every time he thought about it.

Unfortunately for her, apparently being made CEO of a company overnight didn’t win Pepper many fans, despite the fact it seemed to Clint-who, admittedly, wasn’t a member of the business world and didn’t have much experience with it-that she was doing a pretty amazing job at it. And one of those fans had taken it upon himself to eliminate Ms. Potts from the picture.

It was the usual sort of thing: death threats, a slashed tire, but all of it had come to a head a week ago when she’d been delivered a headless cat. That was, as far as Clint could tell, when Phil had finally convinced her this wasn’t some idle threat, but an actual issue that needed to be addressed. And had brought someone on board to do it. Him. Because he wasn’t currently assigned to a mission and Phil liked Pepper and wanted someone he trusted to watch her. At least, that was what his former handler had said.

His knuckles rapped softly on the door to the spacious office at the top of Stark’s Miami office, and he pushed open the heavy wood to let himself in, taking in the size of the room, the amount of windows, points of attack and possible exits all in the beat of time before he introduced himself. “Ms. Potts? Agent Barton. Agent Coulson warned you I’d be stopping by today.” It wasn’t a question, he was in Phil’s office when the man had made the call. “I’m the agent assigned to you for the duration.”
