[Background]
Aya grew up a normal girl with her parents and older brother until just before her sixteenth birthday. On returning from a festival, Aya and her brother discovered their parents murdered in their house. Though Aya was too horrified to notice anything else, her brother realized the house was about to explode and told her to run. Thanks to the warning, Aya managed to escape the blast, but only seconds later met headlights in the rain. The car hit her and sent her into a coma, where she spent the next two years of her life. During this period, she was kidnapped a few times and used as either a hostage, as bait, or as an intended host for a demon-summoning ritual. Aya obviously has no memory of these events, but because of a friendship with another girl who witnessed it all, she does know about it.
Upon her waking, Aya realized she had no family left and had to start over from scratch. Alongside Sakura, the girl who befriended her and told her of what happened while she was unconscious, Aya took up work in the flower shop her older brother once tended.
The two girls worked at this flower shop together for most of the next year; in the summer of the year Aya turned 19, she urged Sakura to get over her feelings for Aya (Ran). Even then, Aya knew that her brother was probably never going to come back to see them again. Although sad, she faced this reality for what it was and focused on living as he would want her to.
Sakura moved to Europe to pursue medicine after that urging, leaving Aya alone once again. Though she missed Sakura just as she missed her family, Aya was happy that Sakura, too, was accepting the loss and moving on to a happier place.
Nothing of significance seems to have happened since Sakura's departure. Aya continues working in the same flower shop three years later, now with a new coworker, a young man of whom we are told nothing-- not even his name. She gets a phone call from her brother, and although he initially opts against saying a word, Aya still realizes it's him.
Upon this realization, Aya becomes frantic and desperate, pleading for her brother to say something, and revealing in the process just how badly she aches to have him back in her life even after all these years and living day-to-day with acceptance of his absence. He only asks her if she is happy. When she responds that yes, she is, he acknowledges as much and hangs up. It is the only direct contact she has had with him since her waking.
When the line goes dead, she lowers the phone from her ear, fully aware, as the tears begin to roll down her face, that it will also be the last.
[Personality]
Aya as a young woman has matured a bit from the playful, exuberant girl she was as a child, though at heart she remains warm and fun-loving. First impressions of Aya may be as someone polite but friendly, and though she may hold a more subdued exterior at first, it can quickly melt away as she becomes more familiar with those she meets. She's sweet-tempered, helpful, and generally pleasant to be around. She enjoys being around people, shares easily, and can be very tender, even maternal. She seems to have a fairly good intuition, and is quite good at noticing various cues from others, though she isn't beyond misinterpreting information or coming to the wrong conclusion.
To a point, Aya still has a bit of inner child in her, but age has shown its impact. She remains innocent at heart, continuing to enjoy little-girl fantasies and nostalgia for her younger years. She's willing to start pillow fights and cuddle stuffed animals, but somewhat less inclined to. Her maturity has additionally tempered some of her former boldness. Although still strong-willed, her sense of tact and verbal self-restraint has increased. She's proactive and persistent about getting what she wants, whether that initiative takes the form of working for it herself or coaxing someone else into helping.
Her brother is perhaps her most exploitable weakness. Deep down, she misses him terribly and is heartbroken over his cutting himself out of her life. She has good coping tactics for the pain and has successfully moved on with her life, but the void in her heart is yet to be filled.
Aya does not resent or begrudge her brother for this void, however, and she will fiercely defend him from accusation. As much as she misses him, she does not allow herself to feel clingy or to dwell on wishes that she knows will not come true.
For her character flaws, Aya can still be a little immature at times. This tendency is not helped by the fact that she is mentally and emotionally two years younger than her physical age. She tends to be impulsive, which can translate into recklessness under certain conditions. She's reasonably astute about noticing inconsistencies and fishy stories, yet still perhaps too trusting and willing to grant the benefit of the doubt. Being a normal girl who has seen very little darkness in her life, she can sometimes (at least temporarily) be paralyzed or controlled through fear.
It is worth noting, however, that due to her strong spirit, courage can usually find her once the threat has had time to sink in. She isn't able to defend herself very well, but she is not the sort of girl that will simply lie down and let something bad happen to her.
Overall, Aya has blossomed into a beautiful young woman. In spite of the tragedy in her life, her heart is predominantly happy and her attitude positive. The private loneliness and sadness she carries do not rule her decisions, her thoughts, or her outlook on life. She demonstrates tremendous inner strength in her capacity to wake up mentally sixteen with every family support in her life removed, then pick up the pieces and move on without dwelling on what she's lost. She appreciates what she has, ever focusing on the brighter tomorrow and the hope that somewhere out there, her brother will find happiness, too.
[Specialties/Abilities]
Aya is a normal human being whose predominant skill is enjoying life.
[Affection]
She may or may not be comfortable with it depending on context but most touching is allowed. So are surprise!kisses. Please talk with me first before anything more serious than that.
On the giving end, Aya can be affectionate with people she knows but she doesn't seek to deliberately make anyone uncomfortable (Well, not in a malicious sense. She might get flirty as a means of teasing someone she likes that's easily flustered.)
[Fighting]
Talk with me before attacking/injuring/killing her. Am open to all but want to plot first.
Aya-chan remembers a bit of self-defense training from her last time here, but she really isn't a fighter. Anyone larger than her or trained in how to fight is likely to have the advantage.
[Other Permissions]
I have no problem with telepaths reading Aya's mind, and likely not with their making use of what they find out, but please confirm with me before doing so. Also, while I don't mind it, because most of what Aya has been through her brother has as well, anyone wishing to broadcast that information would need to get permission from
beyondweiss as well.
No fourth wall breaking, please.
