Short Phrases

I like short phrases. I think that's why I like poetry. These are some bits I found.


I felt thin when I went looking
for cigarettes in the bottom drawer
and found an old card instead
written in a familiar hand.

Can you fall out of love until
you're reminded again?
I didn't read the words.
Just in case.

I didn't want to sleep.
The sooner I sleep,
the sooner I wake up.
I should be overwhelmed
right now.
We're not even friends
anymore.
We're business partners.
I hate you for that.

There should be words
that are so specified
they can only be used once.
I want one of those words
right now.

All normal sounds are
simply mediocre
screams or failed
silence.

I wrote a poem about ice cream once.
It was sad,
and nothing like ice cream should be.
When I say that it is lost to me now,
I don't know if I mean the words
or the intent.
I think it's possible that neither
will ever be able to be retrieved.
