Jews in fantasy

I know people have been posting links to their own Jewish-themed fanfic, but I didn't seen a post for recommending other people's-- if there is, please point it out to me. But anyway, today I was looking through my bookmarks and stumbled over this: Kaddish, by copperbadge, which is a HP fic about Remus and Harry saying Kaddish for James, Lily, and Sirius ( Read more... )

There's Cohen the Barbarian in the Discworld books, but yeah, not really Jewish. :-P

Although Pratchett has mentioned that many people see the Dwarves as being in some way coded as Jewish, and while he didn't intend it, he says he can see it as well, so there's that.

I haven't picked that, though I'm only halfway through the books.

It's something some people pick up on, and others don't. The one place I really got it, instead of just the standard fantasy dwarves with the Pratchettian twist, was The Fifth Elephant. That book deals a lot with dwarf culture and thought, good and bad.

I believe he mentions people reading his dwarves as coded for Jews in The Art of Discworld, but it's been a while since I last re-read it, so I can't say for certain.

I haven't read The Fifth Elephant yet. I'm working my way through in order and have just read Witches Abroad--yay for kick-arse Granny W! I'll look forward to it then.

Granny Weatherwax is awesome-sauce. The Fifth Elephant is about midway through the City Watch books, which are actually my favorite subset of the Discworld novels.

I've only read one of those so far (Guards! Guards!) but I really liked Vimes and his large dragon-breeding lady.

And I love your icon!

Vimes and Sybil are fantastic, and only grow more so as time goes on. Plus, in the later novels you get Carrot, Angua, and Cheri Littlebottom.

And I love your icon!

Thanks! The text actually comes from one of the Discworld novels, but I can't recall exactly which one it was to quote it to you. One where the Librarian features heavily, I believe.

I recognised it--I've read that passage about libraries straining the fabric of reality. :-D

I met Carrot in Guards! Guards!. I need to read more Pratchett and catch up!
