I imagine we have a number of fanfic authors in this community. I'd love to hear how folks deal with Jewish issues in writing fanfic, if at all and any related thoughts on the topic

When I first got interested in Starsky & Hutch fandom, I was thrilled to see so many people had taken Starsky's implied Jewishness and run with it. It had never even occurred to me that people would do that, but in exploring the character many fans also wished to explore his background, culture, religion, etc. The tantalizing clues in the show made people want to know more, so they wrote it (the same is done with Hutch, of course, but in his case fans seem to be more intrigued by his implied wealthy and educated background than by his possible religion, so that's what I saw more of in fanfic that explored Hutch's background).
I was very pleased with much of the fic I read, and I was particularly impressed by how many non-Jews, because of their love for Starsky, had come to be very familiar with Jewish ways.
Some of the most intriguing fic I read was AU (usually set in a different era and/or country) in which Starsky is actually more observant than he is in canon, but still very definitely recognizably Starsky. It made me wonder how time and place might affect how observant we are.
The first S/H fanfic I ever wrote was called "Starsky and Hutch Go To Temple." It isn't very good--fiction is not a comfortable genre for me--but I felt encouraged by this new (to me) world of freedom in fanfic to explore something that I sorely missed in canon.
(this is all slash, by the way)
(p.s. you know I love "Different From All Other Nights" very, very much. *g*)
