the practice of decorating and cutting trees for holidays dates back thousands of years to all kinds of ancient western and middle eastern religions, and it has not been consistant accross time. it's almost a common trait of a religion, a motif like prayer and sacrifice that occurs in many different cultures. it's taken to be a neutral practice and any symbology you want can be applied to it easily, especially with the evergreen nature of coniferous trees.

christmas trees in europe weren't part of any pagan traditions. one of the reasons they became a christian tradition was the act of cutting a tree and bringing it into the home symbolized the subjugation of nature to man, as nature was the holiest ideal to anceint european pagans. this follows the tradition of st boniface, a monk that tried to convert pagans in germany, took an axe and cut down an oak tree that was dedicated to thor. when the pagans saw that thor's wrath didn't come on him as they expected, many converted. a pine tree soon took root in the stump and st boniface said that it meant that life had taken the place of death.
