History:
> prior to events of AC1:
Both Malik and his younger brother Kadar were born into the Order, to the father Faheem Al-Sayf. Both boys were trained from an early age to become assassins and Malik, by the age of 26 has managed to gain a high rank. His brother always remained a few ranks below him, probably due to both being younger in general, as well as Malik's attempts not to involve him too much in the doings of the Order and the missions.

During his time in training he had developed dislike and jealousy, which turned into rivarly, for Altair, for the other's skill and arrogance. The fact that his brother looked up to Altair and tried to follow in his steps rather than his brother's infuriated Malik and only nurtured his dislike.

> the events of AC1:
It all came to a climax during a mission to the Solomon’s Temple that the three (Altair, Malik and Kadar) have been sent on. The mission was to retrive some sort of a treasure. It was then that Altair broke two (and ultimately third as well, seeing what the overall outcome was) tenets of the creed of the Assassin Order. First he had assassinated an innocent priest on their way (breaking the first tenet: stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent), which caused Malik to berate him, even though Altair was of a higher rank than him.

They continued the mission with Malik scouting ahead, Altair assassinated a Templar guard and they came across an alcove overlooking a large room. On the other wall of the room, in another alcove, was the treasure which Kadar initially thought to be the Ark of Convenant which Altair promptly dismissed as “just a story”. A moment after the assassins a group of Templars, among them Robert de Sable, entered the room below. This is when Altair broke the second tenet: hide in plain sight. He decided to reveal himself, despite Malik’s protests and warnings to follow the Creed, and attack openly rather than how the Creed instructed them to. Regardless of Malik’s own feelings on the matter, though, both him and Kadar followed Altair down to face the Templars.

As it turned out it was a bad move all around. Robert managed to stop Altair’s attack and throw him out of the room, leaving Malik and Kadar to fend for themselves against a group of skilled Templars and Robert de Sable. Kadar has lost his life there, while Malik managed quite the feat: he stole the treasure they were sent for, he escaped the Templars and he returned to Masyaf all this while badly injured in his left arm, an injury that rendered it useless.

Back in Masyaf he reported immediately to Al Mualim not only on the general success of the mission, but also of Altair’s treachery. He accused Altair of Kadar’s death and demanded Altair’s life for his brother’s.

This immediately has been followed by a Templar attack on Masyaf, which marks the third tenet Altair’s actions broke: never compromise the Brotherhood. Given his injuries Malik was not able to take part in the defense of the village and the castle.

His left arm turned out to be completely ruined and required to be amputated somewhere above the elbow, between the elbow and the shoulder. With this, Malik has lost his assassin rank and has been relegated to the role of a Rafiq, a scholar.

During Altair’s quest to regain his own rank, which he had lost for his actions during the same mission that put Malik where he was, Malik was initially openly hostile towards Altair. And he had a good reason to. The first time they meet again, Malik doesn’t hide his hatred, criticizes and points out each and every flaw of Altair. They end up arguing. After a successful mission, Malik still berates Altair for failing to avoid raising an alarm in the city.

The second time they meet, Altair actually asks for Malik’s advice rather than demanding it, which pleases him slightly. An that time, after the successful mission Malik actually compliments Altair, or rather the way the assassin went about completing the mission.

The third time they meet, Malik’s attitude is almost the opposite from the first meeting. He seems to have more respect for Altair, speaks with him like with another assassin, and the hostility is pretty much gone.

When the mission doesn’t go as planned, and they discuss whether Altair should return to Masyaf to consult with Al Mualim or immediately chase after Robert to Arsuf, Altair accuses Malik of using the Creed as a shield. He points out that Malik is blind to see the truth. The argument, and Altair’s decision to chase after Robert instead of doing what Malik was suggesting and returning to Masyaf first, almost makes Malik think that Altair hasn’t changed at all to which Altair suggests that Malik learns more about the treasure they stole from the Solomon Temple.

Before leaving, Altair apologises for his actions during the mission that cost Malik his brother and his arm. Malik doesn’t accept the apology, but not because he still loathes Altair, but because he considers the Altair now a different man from the Altair who caused their failure at the Solomon Temple and as such, he had no reason to apologise as the guilt wasn’t on him.

Malik did follow Altair’s suggestion and learned all about Al Mualim’s betrayal from Robert de Sable’s journal which he found back at the Solomon Temple. This convinced him and he gathered the assassins under his command to travel to Masyaf and aid Altair in retaking it. He arrived just in time to save Altair from an attack by a group of hypnotized assassins from the castle.

After a brief chat between the two now friends they part ways, Altair to fight Al Mualim, while Malik and his assassins to make Altair’s job easier what with many hypnotized assassins surrounding the castle. Malik arrives at Altair’s side again when Al Mualim falls and Altair triggers the Apple of Eden to display the world map as something of a hologram. They both stand transfixed before Altair sends Malik to Jerusalem with the information of Al Mualim death.

Personality:
Malik, first and foremost, displays a distinct strength of character and seems like a harsh man. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind, even to his superiors, give his opinion on ideas, point out mistakes, speak of things he doesn’t approve of, or those he does approve of. It’s something made obvious time and time again in canon. He talks back at Altair, even when Altair is his superior, he demands of Al Mualim Altair’s life for his brother’s. Which also shows that Malik is a very direct person and he doesn’t hide his feelings, well, some of them at least. He lets his rage loose, hatred too, and disapproval-- all the emotions that do not make a person seem vulnerable. So it’s only those sorts of emotions he’s willing to share. Though at the same time he isn’t stingy with showing respect where it’s due. He’s never shown to display grief openly (that’s not laced with rage or anger), or any “softer” emotions.

But despite this, despite letting certain of his emotions take over at times, he displays obvious maturity as well. In the end only a mature man would be able to say what he did at Altair’s apology. It wasn’t forgiveness, but it was realizing the change that took place in Altair, without belittling what had actually taken place. His brother had lost his life and Malik himself had lost his arm, which pretty much ruined his life.

The loss of his arm, actually, shows another trait. The general strength and the desire to live. A limb amputation back in his day was a procedure that not many survived, either died of the shock, or some sort of infections following. Malik survived and not only that, he adapted. While it did mean for him also the loss of his rank among the assassins, he didn’t let it dictate his life too much. He adjusted to operate as well as he can, not asking for help with anything.

As an assassin, or former assassin, he’s intelligent and capable of quick thinking and decision making. But it’s not the only thing he took out of his assassin training. Malik based his whole life and work on the Creed. He follows all the tenets to a T, believing them to be what gives the Brotherhood strength.

He is loyal, sometimes even to a fault as it can blind him to see the truth. However again, his wisdom and maturity shows in that if presented with proof of betrayal, he does look past his feelings of loyalty. The fact that he even listened to Altair’s suggestion, when he was convinced in one hundred percent that it couldn’t be true, says a lot about him.

Outwardly, as has been already mentioned, he’s a harsh man, sarcastic, and witty in his retorts even if he doesn’t aim to be such. And while he may seem impatient at first glance, he actually possesses a lot of it-- or enough to be able to paint maps while possessing only one arm.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
> abilities:
He used to be a high ranking assassin, which involves several skills: free running/parkour, swordfighting with both long and short sword, using the throwing knives and the hidden blade. His training also gave him high stamina and strength of a well trained human. It's unclear whether with the loss of his arm he can still climb as well as he used to, or whether he can fight, but given his personality and stubbornness, it's not a long shot to assume that he trained hard and still does to regain at least some fraction of his old physical fitness and abilities.

> weaknesses:
Quite obviously, the loss of his left arm has rendered a lot of his skills either inaccessible for him, so to speak, or it made them more difficult. His balance shifted, he can't climb as well, if at all, his left side is always more exposed than it should, to name a few.

Additionally his loyalty, sometimes even to a fault, might be considered a weakness, as it might sometimes blind him to the truth.

> power limitations:
n/a, he possesses no special powers!

Inventory:
> some throwing knives
> short sword
> maps, paper sheets, feather pen, ink

Appearance:
Fairly tall (but not taller than 6 feet) and well built given his (former) occupation and skill set (being able to climb walls, free run, hang from the ledges while only holding on with his hands/fingers, etc), with dark skin usual for those of Syrian birth. His hair is black, cut short, a little messy and his eyes are equally dark. Malik sports a slight stubble along his well defined, square jaw. He's not quick to smile, especially genuinely, with slightly aquine nose and (surprisingly full) lips usually pressed into a straight line, which along with the usual set of his eyebrows make for expressions that generally seem really closed off and often sarcastic.

What's also important to mention is that Malik's left arm has been amputated. The stump has never been shown without the cover of clothes, so it's difficult to gauge where exactly does it end, but certainly somewhere above his elbow. Given the time period when the amputation was performed, the wound most likely takes a long time to heal and doesn't (and never will) look particularly pretty. Cut with either a saw or sword and cauterized.

He dresses in the usual assassin scholar robes. A long, dark robe with white designs at the bottom and at the ends of the sleeves. Undearneath he wears a white blouse of sorts with hood which he never pulls over his head. Around his middle he wears a red sash, wrapped around like a belt with two endings hanging down at the front and back, over it he has a dark brown leather belt. The breeches under the robes are dark gray, the legs from the knee down held close to the body by the tall, soft leather boots.

SAMPLES
Log Sample:
The awakening is rude, but most of all confusing. There’s some contraption down his throat and Malik feels himself surrounded by some bizarre gooey liquid... that isn’t water, that much he can tell immediately.

It only takes a moment for the discomfort to kick in, make him feel like he’s suffocating. Malik doesn’t remain idle, he hits his fist on the door in front of him. Once, twice, he kicks too. But all he gets for his efforts are aching knuckles and knees and some soft thumps. No other reaction. His movement is sluggish, made slower, more difficult, by whatever it is that’s around him.

Something clicks then, some light somewhere changes -- he can barely see it -- and the liquid seems to disappear, slowly, as if drained somewhere below. When his head is already clear, the contraption in his throat pulls out as well--

Finally he can breathe, even if the first gasp of air is painful.

Finally he can focus a little better on what’s going on too, rather keep thinking of suffocating-- and finally he can realize he has no idea, his memories are hazy, tangled, unclear. But one thing he knows, this is not where he should be.

When the container finishes draining and the door open Malik stumbles out, falls to his knees, barely able to keep his balance along with utter confusion and disorientation. He coughs, stays still for a few moments to gather his strength before getting up. As he does though, something on his arm catches his attention: a black mark on his skin. A number. He rubs his arm against his hip, trying to get rid of it to no avail. Though it brings his attention to another thing: he’s wearing ... something. Something that’s certainly not his clothes and it seems to be already tearing. What--

His surroundings, when he finally looks around, are as unfamiliar as they can get. Completely foreign, alien. “What is all of this?!” He murmurs quietly to himself, even if his blood is starting to boil; despite the appearances, Malik knows when to control his anger. It’s one of those times. Without a second thought he sets out to investigate, find out what’s going on and how to get back. He might not remember clearly what he needs to return for, but he knows it must be important.

Comms Sample:
[excuse him that he’s none too happy at having to use this ... thing... he doesn’t even know what to call it (or how to use it exactly, it’s a miracle he turned it on and knows it’s on). it’s black and it glows and it’s like nothing he had ever seen before. he is wearing the jump suit, though the left sleeve is hanging down loosely, as if empty (and it is empty).]

I do not enjoy wearing someone else’s clothes, so I’d appreciate if my robes were returned to me.

[he’s quiet for a moment, before shutting off the device. best to not give out too much information about yourself right at the start-- showing off that he still has no idea what’s going on from the start wouldn’t be wise. he’s an assassin, or was... but the attitude never leaves you, even if the Brotherhood doesn’t recognize you as one, due to ... things. he can gather all the information he needs about this situation without directly asking for it. and this subject is harmless enough to start off with.]
