Where to start? The past twenty-four hours have been such a whirlwind, it’s hard to keep track of it. Do you want the bad news or the good news first? Maybe I’ll go with the good news first . . . .
I broke the 50,000 word mark tonight. I don’t have the sense of jubilation that I thought i would (though that could be due to the aforementioned bad news and the late hour), but I am rather pleased. There’s still a lot more to go and I feel like I should have been up to this point last week when I was on leave, but I can at least say I’ve completed NaNoWriMo and I’ve written 50,000 words in one month. (see my graph
here - you can tell the days I didn’t get online!)
But now, more importantly, the bad news. Poor Kyoko passed away suddenly last night. She was apparently very unwell in the morning after I left for work, and by the time my housemate and I got home she was cold, had a very slow and weak heartbeat and her breathing was laboured and audible. We rushed her to the vets, but she had a seizure on the way and died within minutes of our arrival. We don’t know what could have caused it, but their recent trip to my parent’s house during our house inspection might have something to do with it. They were outside (albeit in the shade) during three days over 30ºC, so they weren’t being watched all the time. It’s come as a bit of a shock, there has been lots of tears and there is a bit of guilt (well, a shitload of guilt, truth be told) about it, but she’s gone now and nothing can change that. It’s hard to believe just a few days ago she was jumping all over the furniture, chewing stuff, sniffing Beaker and dragging bits of bok choy all over the carpet. She was only about two and a half years old. Sleep well, my beautiful bunny girl.
We took Rubi to the vet’s tonight as a precaution, and he came back with a fairly clean bill of health - he has a slight inflammation of the eyelids which is making his eyes run, but that could be related to the damage to his third eyelid he suffered last year. He appears to be doing well - he’s eating, pooing, hopping, grooming, all the normal bunny things - but he keeps looking everywhere for her so i don’t think he quite understands that she’s gone yet, though he seemed more maudlin than frantic tonight. We’ll be keeping a close eye on his health and behaviour and I sure as hell hope something doesn’t happen to him too. Loosing two beloved pets in three weeks has just about done me in.
