Limbo
Funny word, limbo. It means to be excluded from and to be confined, all at once. An intermediate and transient place, belonging nowhere, yet a state of confinement. An oxymoron, really.
The word stems from the Roman Catholic Church, where limbo is located on the border of hell, for infants and those virtuous souls who lived before Christ. It comes from the Latin word limbus, or border.
It seems to indicate that the middle-ground is as much of a prison as anywhere else.
