[Background] Shikamaru was born into the Nara family in the village of Konohagakure. He was a very… unmotivated child to say the absolute least, taking absolutely no interest in training or anything that required effort. This was to the point where his test scores in school were terrible, not because he wasn't capable, but more because he didn't want to pick up his pencil and write down what he knew. Often sleeping in class, it could be assumed that Shikamaru was a terrible student. But somehow he managed to muddle his way through the academy.

When it came to the point where all the successful Genin were placed in teams, he was placed on a team with Ino Yamanaka and Chouji Akimichi. It wasn't that much of a surprise, considering that his father was placed on a team with the very same dynamic. The three were already familiar with each other, since their fathers were very close friends. Chouji is actually Shikamaru's best friend, and it's been that way for a considerable amount of time. They were placed in a cell with the leader of the team being Asuma Sarutobi, and were a decent team, despite the seemingly constant arguments.

Shikamaru didn't make much of an appearance until it was time for the Chuunin Exams, where all of the Genin teams (as recommended by their cell leaders) were given the chance to rise to the next level of ninja. He was just as unmotivated then, but somehow was persuaded into participating in the exams. During the test-taking portion, his laziness became evident again as Ino used her possession technique to bring her entire team through that round. However in the Forest of Death portion, it's lightly hinted that Shikamaru knows what he's doing in terms of strategy. For the most part, they proceed rather pathetically. But they are momentarily given a chance to shine when helping Sakura defend against a few Sound ninja.

By some miracle, their team manages to get through to the next round and the one-on-one matches. Shikamaru is as unenthusiastic as ever but his pride as a man, not wanting to lose to his female opponent, overpowers that. Using the surrounding area, he used his shadow technique to manipulate his opponent's actions. And considering that he believes that a guy can't exactly just go and beat down a girl, he had his opponent knock her head against the wall. During the month break before the next round of the exam, he's not seen doing much training at all. In fact, it seems that he spent most of his time in the hospital, visiting Naruto and Chouji alternatively.

He has a frightening encounter with Gaara in the hospital, where he realizes just how dangerous the sand ninja is. When the fights begin again, he's considerably more aware of the dangers amongst the opponents, but still doesn't bother to drop out of the competition. After a number of drop outs from the other participants, and a delay in the Sasuke vs. Gaara match, Shikamaru's match is pushed up. He feels like dropping out too, but Naruto pushes him over the edge of the viewing area and he falls down to the fighting arena. By no means does he feel like fighting of his own volition, but his pride gets in the way again as he notices that his opponent is a girl.

During the battle of strategy, Shikamaru's true genius comes into play. It's told by Asuma that he's proficient at games of strategy, and actually has an IQ of over 200. The only downfall is that most of the time he's too lazy to bother showing it. After many moves, Shikamaru manages to get his opponent to fall into his trap as predicted, and is seen as the clear winner of the match once he gets his opponent affected by his shadow manipulation technique. But despite finally managing to capture his opponent and planning out many other moves to move further into victory, he gives up and forfeits the match.

When the attack on Konoha begins, he goes with Naruto and Sakura to chase after Sasuke. He offers strategic advice before leaving the group early and serves as a roadblock for the enemy ninja tailing them. He's saved by Asuma, and for the rest of the arc goes unnoticed. However, he's the only ninja promoted to the rank of Chuunin, due to his amazing strategic skills. Because of this, he's also chosen as leader for the Rescue Sasuke mission. He takes a team of himself and some Genin that he's familiar with before chasing after Sasuke.

The mission overall was a failure and they lost Sasuke to Orochimaru. This is around the time where they move to the time skip. Once Naruto returns to the village, he first sees Shikamaru attending to his Chuunin-ly duties, working with Temari to organize the next Chuunin Exams. Overall, he's the same Shikamaru as always.

[Personality] Shikamaru Nara is above all else, lazy. He's terribly unmotivated and will avoid labor in any way possible. All he wants is a simple life, which he already has planned out. For some reason, becoming a ninja just fit into his plans. Really, he could spend his entire life just watching the clouds and hardly feel obligated to get anything done. There is very little that will get him to do anything willingly. But if absolutely necessary, or if it is to help his friends, he will follow through with it. If it's also a duty to him as a ninja, such as if he were on a mission, he would likely go through with orders.

As a ninja, Shikamaru is given a rather hard job. But what's more so, he was originally brought to the rank of Chuunin not because he was more powerful than the other contestants physically but more because he's most suited to be a leader. The Nara heir knows what he's doing and knows that priorities change, and he knows how to keep them in order. He's hard to get distracted emotionally, but even when he is, he can still form a dependable strategy.

Basically, he accepts responsibility as it comes and goes, never bothering to achieve more than he wants to, and has enough intelligence that he can't fall too far behind at the same time. If he finds something to be too difficult and it really just doesn't appeal to his interests, it won't take him long at all to drop it. He's a good friend and will do whatever he can to assist those that he cares about (but that's a given for almost every Konoha ninja).

[Specialties/Abilities] Physically, Shikamaru is your average ninja. He knows the basic fighting and survival skills. With weapons, he knows the basic tricks with kunai and explosive notes, as well as combining them with his own jutsu. As a ninja, he's quick on his feet and really has no problem with physical combat. He's not as strong as some ninja in that aspect, like Rock Lee or Naruto, but he can handle his own.

However, Shikamaru's very well versed in terms of strategy. With his IQ of over 200, he can be considered a genius, although it can hardly appear that way with his usual haze of laziness overshadowing it. But when in battle, Shikamaru can think many steps, about 200 or so, ahead of the game and manipulate his opponent. He can also assess their jutsu by analyzing their movements before hand.

As for terms of his own jutsu, the Nara family developed their own style. They manipulate their shadow in battle, able to stretch it as long as it maintains its original surface area. Once their shadow manages to attach to their opponents, they can manipulate their enemy's actions. However, this jutsu only works for about 5 minutes before his shadow returns to his normal state. He also learned a few more tricks with his shadow such as splitting his shadow in two different directions, and using it to pick up items and throw them to him.

[Affection] To most affection... Shikamaru will pretty much give off the "WTF" type of response. His mother's more shouty than affectionate and loving, so he's not used to even having females be kind. Most women he ends up meeting tend to be on the more "loud and troublesome" side. As for what affection he'll end up giving to your character... there probably won't be much love there at all. |D;;

[Fighting] Shikamaru's a crazy genius, like over 200 IQ points kind of crazy. So he won't go down without a fight. He can plan many steps ahead, and so far has only been beaten by his own father in games of strategy. And while there's no point in canon so far that he's been defeated in terms of strategy, if his enemy can distract him enough that he can't concentrate, he'd be in a bit of a tight spot. You're free to pick a fight with him, although he probably won't respond to most badgering. As for killing... I'd really rather avoid it if I can. D:

[Other Facts] Fft. I'll add to this later.
