This fic is set in some indeterminate time c2012; Xander still has the Africa beat. Um, and Cordelia is alive...

There was darkness. There was cold.

There was a voice. It sounded exceedingly pissed.

“Remind me why we’re here?”

Xander went for the simple answer. “Demons.”

But Cordelia Chase was not and never had been likely to fall for simple answers. Especially when she was this uncomfortable. “No, really. Xander Harris, why did you invite me to Windhoek in August?”

“C’mon, Cordy. I wanted to see you. I always want to see you.” This was true.

There was silence in the darkness. Then: “Okay. Good answer. But why did I come here?”

Xander risked it. “Um.. I’m here because of demons.. You’re here because you wanted to see me?”

She huffled a little, in a Yeah, right, Mister manner, but didn’t actually say it outright. “You didn’t mention the weather.”

“You could have googled.” Oops. That was challenging. Cordelia was clearly not in the mood for challenge.

“I would think you’d know me well enough by now that I expect you to mention if the temperature drops thirty degrees overnight here. Also, power cuts. I was in Mauritius!”

She was sounding a little cranky. Make that homicidal. Xander avoided mentioning anything about the obviousness of the southern hemisphere having winter in August. The power cut was unlucky, it was true. They’d been having a nice romantic dinner, with candles, when the candles suddenly became essential, and therefore unromantic. Before the entree was cooked, too, so Cordelia was probably hungry. Then the candles went out. And Xander had, it turned out, lit his emergency candles along with all the rest. For added romance. Hah.

“There’s chocolate,” he offered, somewhat hopelessly. There was ice cream too, but that didn’t seem like the best offer. “Or we could just go to bed.”

Xander could just see Cordelia’s profile in the cloudy moonlight. If his straining eyes didn’t deceive him, she was smiling.

“Thought you’d never ask.” No, his eyes were right on the money. Her voice sounded warm and inviting. A hell of a lot more inviting than his chilly dark living room.

His bed was cold, but a naked and smiling Cordelia warmed it quickly enough. She was comfortably draped across his chest, purring approval of his hands warming up some of her more curvy extremities.

“I think I like you furry.”

“Whu-?”

“Your chest. Now hairier than when you were a teen. I like.”

“Really? I thought real men waxed.” Even joking, Xander could feel his whole body shrivel at the thought of hot wax on sensitive flesh. Fortunately, Cordy was chuckling.

“Models? Sure. Boybands? Eh, who cares? Men need a little fuzziness. Makes you snuggle-able.”

Xander had a feeling that today’s international sophisticate Cordelia wouldn’t have said any of this in the light. Nor cuddled quite so extravagantly. It would have clashed with her outfit, and the terrifyingly sharp haircut.

He was increasingly less unhappy with the power cut, as his hands started to stray increasingly widely. Still, “You make me sound like a teddy bear,” he grumbled.

Cordy arched into his touch, and murmured in return, “Mmmm... Way better than a teddy bear. Way more flexible. Now show me what those opposable thumbs can do.”
