A vampire doesn't have to breathe, but if he likes to talk (a lot), smoke(a lot) or sing (only under demonic spells) then it's a habit best maintained.
The trouble with habits? They get addictive. You feel you need to do what you know in theory you only choose to do.
That applies twice as much under water, when your head is forced into a bucket and held there till your lungs are bursting like they're not supposed to.
But while your brain is screaming for oxygen it doesn't need, you feel human. And that makes it just about bearable.
