I wanted to change the banners for the new year and since I was behind, I did the Jan and Feb banners with the same coloring and style. But I want some feedback, our old banners versus our new banners. Under the cut is examples of the old banners versus the new ones and then some questions about them

With the new size, I'm going to have to upload them to Photobucket, and then link them on LJ, because otherwise they'll be too small, or else all fuzzy.

Maybe we can push the max size for Scrapbook? The bigger size is a little easier for me in terms of getting everything to fit, etc. But if we can find a size that is still larger but can be uploaded to Scrapbook, I think we will be okay.

The problem is that, when I upload something to LJ, it automatically makes the picture a certain size (pretty much the size of the old banners) and then if I readjust the size, it just scales up the small-size picture, so it ends up all fuzzy.
I'm aware that it's apparently possible to upload larger pictures to Scrapbook - because other people seem to - but I have no idea how it's done, despite a few hours of trying.

The size is fine when you upload them. Take this image for example. It is still 450px. But when you are posting to your LJ, it is posting them as a thumbail that links to the original sized picture. This thumbnail is 320x240.
I think that's because instead of linking directly to the image, you are using LJ's image coding, which makes it into a thumbnail. You can direct link to the image with the img src tag and the image URL with the backslash at the end removed.
For example:
Original image: http://pics.livejournal.com/deird1/pic/0006wtz0
Gallery image: http://pics.livejournal.com/deird1/pic/0006wtz0/
Coding on your LJ < a href="http://pics.livejournal.com/deird1/pic/0006wtz0/"> < img src="... )
