It’s not true that Wolfram and Hart steals their employees’ babies.

What good would that do them? They couldn’t know whether they were worth the trouble. Better to build with what you know.

What is true is that the Senior Partners have an ear open to the spirit world, and when they hear of a good soul (meaning one that suits their particular interests) coming up for grabs they... well, they grab it. And if that soul formerly belonged to an employee of the firm: that would be a sign they’ve been hiring the right guys.

Eve’s soul had previously belonged to a junior clerk in Demon Relations. She’d never got very far with her career, partly because of a jealous supervisor, but mainly due to being crushed into smithereens by the Beast before her twenty-third birthday. But she’d had ambition, and obedience, and a total absence of meaningful morality. So her soul was filed for future reference. Turned out to be useful sooner than expected.

Eve’s body was model 56BD-C. It was a relatively popular option with the Senior Partners, who understood the power of young, short-skirted females to befuddle corporate brains. It was a low-maintenance body, speedy of metabolism and low in cholesterol and blood pressure. No dental plan needed, which was a handy saving.

Eve’s brain was her own. Once they’d got the soul and body together, and confirmed they needed a new liaison at the Los Angeles branch, the Senior Partners selected a candidate from the nursery.

She’d been waiting for this for a long, long time. She was pleased with the body (mmm, girly!) and tolerated the soul. It didn’t bother her often.

In the end, it was the brain that caused problems. That met Lindsey MacDonald and fell head over heels (see how useful that body was? She'd never done that before.), and that led to her waywardness and termination after only eight months on contract.

The soul went back into the files. The body was pretty much trashed, and was discarded. The brain went for re-education, but it failed the course, and never went on assignment again.
