“Ahn, any chance we could get to the end of the street today without me going insane at the pumpkin-greeting ritual?”
“I’ve told you frequently, Xander, greeting the Jack O’Lantern neutralises his power. You don‘t mess with the pumpkin head, not when there are so many of his avatars around.”
“And I’ve told you also often that we in the non-demonic community are surprisingly fearless about hollowed-out squash.”
“And I’ve told you that I’ve lost one lover to Jack O’Lantern and I don’t intend to repeat that horrible, squishy feeling of unexpectedly kissing a half-man, half-rutabaga.”
“When was that, exactly? 1325? Not all the old world demons made it over here.”
“Alexander Lavelle Harris, we can argue about your terrifying ignorance of vegetable history and provenance all night, or we can get back to restraining the demon your neighbours have been busy raising in their cute little domestic way.”
Xander is about to continue the Squabble Without End when -
Hey, Xander. Jack’s got you in his sights
“Did you hear that?…Never mind. We need to get going or we‘ll miss the start.”
And they continue along the street, Anya still greeting pumpkins by name and Xander…Well, Xander’s surreptitiously waving at the glowing faces and silently hoping the greeting doesn’t have to be verbal to keep Jack at bay.
Jack be quicker next time...
