Kaylee opened the hatch and climbed down into Jayne’s bunk as she had a million times before.
The bunk was as bare as the day he moved into it, except for the pile of blankets on the double futon in the corner.
"It’s true then? You’re leavin’ us?" Her voice was shaking and she planted her hands on her hips to keep them from doing the same.
"Don’t ya knock anymore, Kaylee?" Jayne didn’t look up as he tossed the last of his things into a worn duffel bag.
"Never thought I’d need to. Never thought I’d see the day when you left this boat with Inara."
"I’m not leaving with ‘Nara, we just happen to be gettin’ off at the same time." His eyes met hers and he grinned, inviting to her to share the joke.
Kaylee crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him.
"Jayne?" A small, soft voice came from under the pile of blankets, followed by a head of tangled black hair.
"Yeah, baby-girl?"
Kaylee felt her stomach clench painfully. She thought she might vomit as River crawled out from under the covers. "Jayne, you’re nothing but a Hwoon dahn bu fen de pi hua"...her voice trailed away as her throat tightened up.
River stood on wobbly legs. She looked like a child playing dress-up in one of Jayne’s old black t-shirts."I should go now," she whispered and started towards the stairs.
"You don’t have ta go. Kaylee was just sayin’ her good-byes." He carefully wiped away the tears spilling out of Rivers’ eyes.
River shook her head. "It’s getting very crowded in here." She slipped up the stairs, silent as a ghost.
"Shen me di yu shi nin er ren wei? She’s just a little girl!" Kaylee’s face was red and her voice was rising with every word.
"Bizui! River ain’t been a little girl in a long time. She ‘n I can’t never be with who we love, what with you up an’ leavin’ me for the doc an’ River..."
"Love?? I knew we was bunk buddies, but I thought that was all. You never said nothin’ different." Kaylee’s voice trembled and her eyes welled up with tears.
"It was just disgustin’, the way you threw yerself at him, like some pofu in heat..."
Kaylee slapped him across the face hard enough to rattle his brainpan.
Jayne flashed her a predatory grin. "Well, now L’il Kaylee, that’s more like it." He moved closer until she backed into the wall. "Does the doc ever get you all riled up like this?"
Kaylee’s mind whirled with confusion. "Simon says he loves me."
"Does he love you like this?" Jayne’s hands gently caressed her face and neck as his tongue slid softly across her lips. When Kaylee pressed against him, he pulled her close and kissed her until they were both breathless.
"Ask me to stay, Kaylee." His breath was warm in her ear, his lips hot on her neck.
"Stay, Jayne. Please stay."
