He watched her from across the room, her brown hair falling into her face as she poured over yet another ancient text. She looked so out of place. A girl as young as Dawn should be out partying and causing havoc.
He had never really gotten a chance to do that himself, because well, people like Xander and Dawn could never be normal.
Dawn was an ancient glowy key thing and he was.. well, he could have been perfectly normal but he strayed away from that path a long time ago.
He had never been one of the guys, dripping with masculinity, talking about such important topics as wrestling or Miss September. Sure, wrestling was cool and Miss September was very nice, but he had never really dwelled on them.
He just stayed with his little trio, Willow, Xander and Jesse. That was how they liked it. They didn’t care what people thought. Sure, Willow always had runs in her stockings and never had the right clothes, or even the right hair.
She read instead of grinding random guys at the Bronze and he respected her for that.
And Jesse, well Jesse had more Star Wars knowledge than anyone alive; except for maybe Andrew, now that he thought about it.
Then, Buffy came along, and he had an excuse to be weird.
Normalcy was overrated, but that didn’t change the fact that he had survived more than his fair share of manly encounters. He should have died so many times and…he didn’t know why. Xander Harris had never thought of himself as one to stare death in the face, but he chose to. He didn’t run away, and he wouldn’t this time.
Luck could get him through, it always did. Or maybe Dawn was right, maybe he did have something special. He could see the positive, and he knew they were gonna make it through.
Sure, there were risks, but a person could die walking across the street couldn’t they? He’d fight this fight, because it was just like any other. If he lost, he’d be in good company. People like Tara, Jenny, and Jesse would be waiting for him.
