ch.19

Awkward. Utterly awkward.

That was how Yoochun described that moment.

He and Junsu were sitting in the kitchen, across each other, acting like they had just met not less than five seconds ago (or maybe they haven’t met at all because of the sheer awkwardness they were emitting).

Junsu had his hands around his cup of tea, right thumb playing with the left as he kept stealing glances at the older man. It had been a while since he last saw him but Junsu never expected Yoochun’s attitude and demeanor to change in such a short time. Usually, when Junsu came over (either alone or with Jaejoong) he was greeted warmly by Yoochun and they never seem to run out of things to talk about. But when he arrived more than five minutes earlier, Yoochun didn’t greet him with his usual smile. Instead, he was greeted with a cold glare followed by a deep frown then a grunt that sounded like a cross between ‘annyeong’ and ‘whaddayawant’. It even felt like Yoochun had let him into his house because he was obliged to. And, now, Junsu was feeling too uncomfortable to even mumble a simple syllable like ‘hi’. If he didn’t know any better he would say Yoochun was PMS-ing. Jaejoong was wrong when he said the guy was troubled. To Junsu, it was clear Yoochun was very, very deeply troubled.

Yoochun, on the other hand, was silently panicking. He didn’t expect Junsu to drop by. A call, maybe (as he was sure Jaejoong had told the younger guy about him), but a visit? He wasn’t prepared for that. And, now, looking at the accursedly adorable guy in front of him, Yoochun felt a very weird concoction of emotion: giddy, shifty, uncomfortable, sad, happy, cold, angry, hopelessly in love and a bunch of other things he couldn’t comprehend right now… It was crazy. He felt worse than a school girl undergoing puberty (not that he had experienced that). He kept shifting his gaze from the table to the younger guy’s face (which was looking at him from time to time, making his heart fluttered). Yoochun knew he should do something, say something. But, hell, his brain was so muddled he couldn’t even breathe properly (or was it Junsu’s effect?) so he chose to stay quiet. He pursed his lips real hard and settled in making his face looked as cold as permafrost, to give the look like he was the unluckiest and angriest man alive.

That was except for the few split-seconds when he couldn’t control his smile and his lips has curled upwards. Thankfully, the younger man noticed this, taking it as an odd sign that it was safe for him to talk.

“Uh… hyung?” Junsu muttered, breaking the grueling silence that had enveloped them. “Are you feeling okay?”

“Uh… yeah,” the older man answered, his usual baritone voice turned gruff by his nervousness.

“You look… different and you seem very angry. Is something troubling you?”

Hell, it’s you. “No, nothing at all.”

“Are you sure? You know you can talk to me,” Junsu said with a wide smile in an effort to be friendly.

I doubt that. I’m sure you’ll freak if I told you everything. “Yeah, I know. I’m just stressed,” Yoochun said, shifting in his seat. It was cleared Junsu wasn’t convinced with that but Yoochun had then changed the subject. “Why are you here?” Yoochun didn’t mean to sound rude but annoyance was apparent in the question he just asked.

Junsu flinched for a second but managed to compose himself. “Hyung called me earlier. He said you saw,”-he swallowed before proceeding-“the ad.”

“Oh, that,” Yoochun’s frown got deeper. “Look, if you want to advertise yourself to a bunch of businessmen or bums or whatever, fine. It’s your prerogative. I don’t see the point in telling it to my face when-”

“But I didn’t post that ad,” Junsu cut in.

“Huh?”

“I didn’t. I mean, I made one and I was planning to but I didn’t go through with it. But someone hacked into my laptop, changed the details and then placed it under my name. I called the site and they took it down.”

Yoochun breathed a silent sigh of relief, “So who would do that to you?”

“Just someone from the magazine. He’s been meaning to get me into trouble ever since I worked there but now he’s fired.”

“Just for placing an ad?”

“No, he got arrested for embezzlement. I did a little detective work and found the missing funds for some of our photoshoots, in the exact same amount, in his account.”

Yoochun smiled, admiring what Junsu had done. He may be adorable-looking but he can be scary when crossed. But as soon as Yoochun noticed this and the fact that they were conversing like the good friends that they were again, his smile disappeared and it was replaced by a cold frown again.

“You didn’t need to drive here to tell me that. You could’ve just called,” he said.

“I know. But that’s not the main reason I came here.”

Yoochun raised an eyebrow. “What then?”

“Jaejoong said you were troubled. And I could tell. I’m worried.”

At those last two words, Yoochun’s mind went blank. He felt butterflies in his stomach and his heart accelerated.

Did he just say what I think he just said? “W-what?”

“Hyung, something’s troubling you,” Junsu said, his hand reaching out to touch Yoochun’s. The older guy couldn’t breathe as he stared at their intertwined hands. He gazed up at Junsu, who was smiling brightly at him. Yoochun gulped. This scene was just too good to be true.

“You could tell me about it, right?” the younger man inquired softly.

Yoochun looked down. Should I tell him? What I’m really feeling?

“Hyung, come on, tell me what’s troubling you. We’re friends right?”

Before Yoochun could even decide, Junsu had to ruin the moment. Yoochun’s frown returned. Friends. Yes, they were friends. They had been friends. And that’s all they’re going to be in Junsu’s eyes, at least that was what Yoochun thought. He was just a mere friend to Junsu, nothing more than that.

‘Well, you could be more if you just freaking confess!’ piped a voice in his head but Yoochun shrugged it off. If Junsu had even a hint of feeling for him, he would’ve shown it by now. Junsu was the kind of guy who would flirt endlessly to someone he likes. But he never flirted with Yoochun, just normal friendly conversations and the usual jokes but even those are much more frequent whenever Jaejoong was around.

“Y-yeah,” Yoochun mumbled quietly. “We’re friends. Thanks for worrying but there’s no need to. I’m just stressed, that’s all, honest.”

Yoochun forced a smile, hoping the younger man would not see through it. The doorbell rang. Yoochun got up.

“That must be Hyun Jin.”

“Oh, she’s staying with you now?” Junsu inquired, also standing up and following Yoochun towards the door. Yoochun did not know if it was his imagination or whether Junsu really did sound dejected. He figured it was his imagination.

“You can say that.”

“Oh… I-I better go then.”

“Yeah, sure.”

“Take care of yourself, hyung.”

“You too.”

Junsu headed to a bar after visiting Yoochun. He needed a drink. He needed to clear his head.

‘Of what?’ piped a small voice in his head. The ad thing was finished, Heechul got what he deserved for taking the magazine’s money and you don’t have any problem regarding the articles you’re working on. You have no problem and have nothing to worry about.

Except maybe for Yoochun-hyung, he thought.

How the older man had acted earlier was beyond odd. It felt like Yoochun was not acting like himself. He didn’t even look like himself either. There were dark rings around his eyes, his face was pale and his clothes looked baggy on him. Yoochun looked dead tired and really resembled a bum.

At first, Junsu thought it was because of his job. Sure, Yoochun worked mostly at home, writing and composing songs for commercials and even big time artists. He only went to the studio when he really needed to but it didn’t mean his job wasn’t stressful. Yoochun have to face unfair deadlines, persistent producers, unsatisfied artists as well as managers and even the occasional writer’s/composer’s block.

But if it was not that, then maybe Yoochun was having troubles with his girlfriend. Of course Junsu wasn’t a professional at love but he knew well enough that wasn’t the case. He had met the girl earlier. She was sweet and kind and they looked perfectly happy as they hugged each other. It was then that Junsu saw Yoochun finally smile genuinely (he frowned at this, a tad bit disappointed that the girl, and not him, made his hyung feel better but he quickly shrugged the feeling away). Besides, the girl was already staying at Yoochun’s for a while which meant their relationship was going well.

So what was troubling Yoochun? It must be something big to make the guy like that. And why was he not telling him about it?

This bothered Junsu. Was his hyung angry at him? Did he do something bad that made him untrustworthy to his hyung?

Junsu sighed as his mind continues to be plagued by more questions. He took another swig from his glass of whiskey before placing it back down on the counter with a soft ‘thud’.

“Kim Junsu?” a familiar voice inquired.

Junsu turned. His mouth gaped as he stared at the man who called him, someone he hadn’t seen in a long while. “S-Siwon?”
