Angel scrubbed a hand over his face as he pushed the front doors to the Hyperion open. It was late, a few hours before dawn and he was tired. He hadn't slept much while in New York. Not surprisingly, in the city that never sleeps, demons and vampires rarely did either. The tunnel system was complex and far reaching. Add to that, the subway system and all the places a demon could hide in there, he'd been forced to use most of the hours in the day and night to accomplish his task. Of course he hadn't gotten much out of anyone. One demon had muttered the words 'Sounds like a vengeance gig to me' but he'd died before he could say anything else. He hadn't called Buffy yet to let her know the extent of everything he hadn't found out but he would eventually.

As soon as he walked in the door, her scent hit him. She'd spent a great deal of time there while he was gone. A glance at the arch in the entry way had confirmed that. She'd finished it and it looked beautiful, better than it had when Angel had stayed there in the fifties. The shine had already begin wearing off the old girl at that point. He checked the desk that Cordelia had once used, the one that Scarlett was setting up for herself. There were a couple of messages there but nothing he couldn't take care of later. He moved out from behind the front desk and up the stairs. Midway up the sound of her heartbeat hit him, faint at this distance but confirming that she was still there. There was no use checking the other rooms because as he got closer, it was clear she was in his room and she was asleep. Irritation and fear prickled at him. He'd told her to stay out of his room. Primarily because he kept all his blood in the fridge there. There were other things there, books he didn't want everyone having access to, files like Connor's, bits and pieces of odds and ends.

He opened the door to find Scarlett asleep on his bed, curled up in the blankets with her cat curled up next to her. He shut the door behind him very quietly and stood there for a moment. He didn't want to wake her up because she looked peaceful. Which was why he couldn't go get any blood. The ping of the microwave would wake her up and his stomach turned at the idea of cold blood. He'd eat it but he'd have to be a lot more hungry than he was right now. In any case, he'd promised her they'd talk and he'd make omlets and bacon. He'd just gotten back a little later than he'd planned. He walked over and sat down on the edge of the bed, his fingertips ghosting across her cheek as he moved a strand of hair off her face.
