This has been one of the busiest semesters I think I'll ever have to deal with. The grades are a huge surprise, especially considering my inability to show up to the final crit in my printmaking class because of an uncharacteristic bout of anxiety caused by way too much stress and my utter lack of any work to show for the carving independent study with Brad (I feel obliged to make some really amazing pieces for him this summer to make up for that) AND the fact that I didn't write an 8-page paper for my Anthropology of Judaism class (which wasn't mandatory, but it was necessary if you wanted an A in the class, supposedly).
Geez. Writing all the things I didn't do this semester makes me wonder what the hell I did get done the past 4 or 5 months.
I hope everyone else is as pleasantly surprised by their grades.
The prospect of being in Advanced Sculpture next semester is starting to psyche me out already. It seems that with everything open my mind tends to shut down and my creativity necessarily subsides. Hopefully being able to enter the shop whenever I want will lead to my actually working on my own projects this summer, so as to jumpstart my ability to finish work without deadlines and 'projects' to curb my creative output. This, of course, is going to be hindered by my increasing turn toward introspection and quiet activities. I have found that over the course of the past few weeks I have been happiest lying quietly outside with a book or someone to talk things over with.
I'm almost done with Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson which has proved to be one of the most poetic and quietly beautiful books I've ever read. I've never seen the day-to-day put down in writing so wonderously--I am starting to rediscover a deep appreciation for the minutia of everyday life.
"Those who talk about revolution and class struggle without referring specifically to love and what is so crucial about everyday life- these people have claws in their mouth."

Hopefully, every book this summer will be as rewarding.
An article was printed in the American Prospect by Mike Tomasky that has been generating a lot of debate and counter-arguments on the status of the democratic party within the world of political publications. I'm linking it here in case someone has read one of the subsequent articles but hasn't seen the original yet, or in case someone is interested in such things but hasn't heard about it yet. Its an interesting read and well argued, if not a little naive about the prospects of his recommendations actually succeeding.
