So Blockbuster has a thing where for $15 you can get unlimited movies for a week (2 at a time). I was a MOVIE WATCHING FOOL and went through 20 of Hollywood's finest films! Here is a copy and paste from my Twitter, along with some selective afterthoughts.
Rockn'Rolla: I probably should have payed more attention, but it's Guy Ritchie so I'll watch it 20 more times and love it.
RocknRolla Part II: Gay!Dance!Party! I have no idea why, I really need to watch this again...
Noah's Ark, Jumping the Broom: TOO CUTE! Ultra contrived and hot mess, but that's what the show is. It's the black QAF and all kinds of wonderful!
Another Gay Sequel: Hot mess, but LOL! I love this series because it opens doors for better productions with less censorship. And it's hott.
Another Gay Sequel Part II: I know I did it already, but - Brent Corrigan plays Stan the Merman. Did I say that already? OH WELL! STANDAMERMAN!
Between Love & Goodbye: Schlocky, but not in a gay film way. Just in a schlocky film way, terrible ending, but I got invested, good going!
This movie was indeed pretty terrible, but it had a great next to ending and an okay ending and overall it was... watchable. But got dangit as much as I hated the bands music, the title song got stuck in my head like no other.
Amnesia: The James Brighton Enigma - At first I was like LOL, but then I srs'd. He was a Canadian born in London, but then he was Southern.
I kind of fell in love with this movie. It was all kinds of dramatic, but I liked it a lot. It was a mystery and when all the pieces came together you still couldn't see the picture and I liked that. I like that he created a life for himself and when he found out it wasn't his he missed it. If you're into gay amnesia movies I say give it a go!
Holding Trevor: It has "Ceth" from Shortbus with a buzz cut. I have totally checked out, I'm going to go get Another Gay Sequel instead.
Effing Boo Capes! It had "Ceth" in it, and he was amazing as per usual, but the rest was so mediocre and contrived and ridiculous.
Milk: EPIC. So heartbreaking and touching. When the boy in the wheelchair said "I didn't want to die anymore" I CRIED REAL HUMAN TEARS!!
The Namesake: Just lovely if not a bit long. I liked how he rediscovered himself and overall it was very sweet. I may elaborate.
There are racial and cultural dynamics played out here that are so in depth and beautifully poignant. So may little nuances that make the characters pop and really give you a look into the home life of someone who was transplanted from one world to another. It was really moving and I would recommend it to anyone.
Spring Breakdown: Parker Posey, Amy Poehler, Seth Meyer as "a gay", and Jane Lynch. These are the only reasons it didn't suck. ONLY reasons.
Choke: The previews made it look like a fun Heimlich maneuver romp. It wasn't, but it wasn't terrible, so there's that. It was... yeah.
This movie was very dark and absurd and pretty great except the marketing was the same that seemed to be done for Black Snake Moan. BSM wasn't a thriller where the black man kidnaps the white girl and shenanigans ensue, but instead was a coming of age drama where each party traded baggage. This movie was not a film about scamming money as a choking victim per se, but more about a man's quest for identity and coming to terms with who he is.
The thing both movies have in common is a lot of sex/cussing/nudity/craziness which I guess makes it hard to put together a coherent trailer.
Slumdog Millionaire: Even better the second time around.
The Women: Lots of them, only 1 boy the entire movie. Well, in person, the whole thing was about men mostly. And Jada being a big ole lez.
The only thing that could make me not enjoy this film more would be if Dianne Keaton were to show up. I mean honestly, I couldn't stand it. Like, "ooh we're so edgy and this is an all women cast, we're so empowered" except how EVERYTHING HAD TO DO WITH MEN! And maybe that was the point, but by that time I didn't even care anymore.
Paul Blart Mall Cop: I feel like this is less movie reviews & more me showing you my sucky taste in movies. This is a PG Observe and Report
Have you all seen Observe and Report with Seth Rogan? Watch that, subtract the funny and the bipolar, and you pretty much have Paul Blart Mall Cop. I think it was one of those things where they were probably working on the same movie at the same time and had no clue, but I wasn't a HUGE fan of O&R so you can guess how I felt about this. One part made me giggle, but that was about it.
Bedtime Stories: Just adorable if not a bit self indulgent on Adam Sandler's part. Very sweet. And HOLLA RUSSELL BRAND!
Revolutionary Road: Not as good as I'd like it to be, but very thoughtful. I like how both were to blame. They should have went to Paris.
On the other hand, I wanted it to be a bit more uplifting instead of so "real". I love how going against the grain in this '50s/'60s context was the woman supporting the home. It was very well done and lovingly acted, but it was so.. sad! I'm glad I watched it, but I probably wouldn't watch it again.
Internet Dating: Thought it was Katt Williams stand-up, instead ghettofied Cyrano D'Bergerac. I'll let you know how that goes.
Oh God, don't even get me started. Y'all, they had to blur out a Laker's logo in one scene, in the rest the sound editing was so hacked you couldn't hear anything but traffic! Just terrible!
Rachel Getting Married: Pretty typical in an Amy Winehouse kind of way, but not unenjoyable. Lots of overdone emotion, but it worked.
What I mean to say is that Princess Mia played Kym in a far out guilt ridden crazy attention whore way and it worked. Good goin' Annie!
I love how absolutely selfish Rachel was and how she had to be. How overwhelmingly needy and crazy and real this chick was and how annoying and terrible as well. At first I thought I hated the movie and then I realized I loved it and now I'm really trying to tap into why. Should be an interesting journey.
The Reader: Hannah Scmitz was a lotabit crazy wasn't she? A beautiful film, so sad & a little frightening. Just... wow. A+ in a scary way.
This movie was... WOW. How did she not get an Oscar for this? Totally creepy in the most satisfying way, I want to watch it again and again. Absolutely haunting and just right. And that's not even referencing the pedophilia, but the trial scenes and what followed? Brilliant.
Taken: I thought it would be another Die Hard, but GOT DANG! I'm not even done with it and I am INVESTED! Liam Neesen's accent is hilarious!
I love Liam Neesen and his relentless accent. It's such where it seems so difficult and inconvenient for him to speak English, but I honestly have no idea where he's actually from. Wait, let me look it up real quick... Oh, Northern Ireland? I never would have guessed. Anyhow, I love him and this movie very much. It was thrilling, filled with lots of "GOT DANG!" moments and held my intention the entire time. It's always fun to see what happens when ex-ABC agents retire and then have their families held for ransom.
W: Actually a masterpiece and very well done. Didn't like that it all boiled down to Daddy issues, but that may have been the truth. Hmm..
If the actual George Bush were as hot as J Brolin, I think the country would have a lot more sympathy for him. Too bad he's NOT!
