Is that Mandy's version of Umbrella? I'm on dial-up, I can't play it. I like it, but I'm also fully aware that a) it's a folksy version on an extremely pop song, which makes it AC and dorky by default; b) I'm liking it in contrast to Rihanna, which gives just about anyone doing the song an unfair advantage (it IS Rihanna, after all); and c) I like a lot of random stuff that most other people can't stand. I'm not really a barometer for the cool or avant-garde.

It's not quite Alanis, but Alanis picked the most absurd song possible so she could be morose and "you need to see how stupid pop music these days" with hers. There's a really dry sense of humor about it coming from her. But Mandy is actually singing Umbrella like she means it, which makes her seem like she's either lacking that same sense of humor, or that she's a little dingy and the plot just flew right over her head. Or both. When she does the folk version of her own song (Candy), then it's good and slightly morose and funny, b/c she's poking fun at herself and struggling to remember the lyrics, or not even bothering to struggle.

Yeah, I think it's her sincerity through the lack of willful execution that gets me. There are interesting parts, but it's not very good. Even on it's own. I would still lvoe to hear the folk version of candy.
