Dear flist,

Semicolons. Teach me.

Stix

Okay, so I've been taught that semicolons basically join two complete sentences. Is this correct? What other ways can they be used? I really enjoy the semicolon, but would like to ensure that I'm using it correctly. I'm still a little fuzzy on the "however;" clause, but that can come later.

por ejemple:

You hear the oddest things in that house; for even when it seems to be barren, something impregnates its atmosphere.

Is this right? If not, why? I want that pause there, but I don't necessarily want another comma.

Also this:

These excessive displays of emotion are said to be run-off from a childhood that disallowed any demonstration of positive feeling, but regardless; when they happened life either got successfully uncomfortable, or a whole lot more interesting.

I'm pretty sure it's wrong, but I can't figure how to separate them without being choppy.

And finally, this has nothing to do with semicolons:

[She] was out of town which made it fundamentally more easy for me to hit on her husband.

fundamentally easier, or fundamentally more easy? Which one is correct, which sounds more fauxtentious?

Thank you in advance my brilliant ones!

world domination, advise
