College trio carjacked by 12-year-old

Three Main Line college kids learned the gritty reality of the city streets the hard way.

Their teacher: A 12-year-old Mantua boy armed with a gun.

The lesson: Pay attention to what is going on outside the car while waiting at a traffic light in a seedy neighborhood.

Police
said that at 8:45 p.m. Monday, the adolescent thug ran up to the
$30,000 Audi A4 on Lancaster Avenue near 41st Street and pointed his
weapon at the head of the 21-year-old driver while screaming "Shut the
f--- up. Get out of the car."

The Haverford College students
grabbed their backpacks and jumped out of the car, leaving three doors
open, a Haverford junior who was sitting in the backseat of the car
during the "10-second" ordeal told police.

The gun-toting
pre-teen then hopped behind the wheel and sped off, leaving the
bewildered trio on Lancaster Avenue unharmed. One of the students
dialed 911, while the driver called her boyfriend asking him to meet
them at the crime scene.

"It was very unexpected," said the Haverford junior.

The students requested that the Daily News not identify them, saying they were scared of young city criminals finding their way to the liberal-arts school.

"All
of sudden this little kid is trying to open the door," the junior said.
"I thought the gun was fake, but I wasn't in the position to ask."

After the robbery, radio dispatchers alerted West Philly officers to watch for the stolen car.

About
two hours later, cops said they found the 12-year-old near 42nd and
Wallace streets, joyriding in the Audi with his two friends - three
blocks from where police said he carjacked the vehicle.

"Unfortunately
it is not rare for a juvenile of that age to commit a crime with a
handgun," said Sgt. Clifton Lyghts of Southwest Detectives. "Luckily no
one was hurt."

Last night, police said they were waiting for the
D.A. to charge the 12-year-old and his friends - a 17-year-old and
Timothy Scott, 18 - with carjacking, theft and firearms violations,
though they didn't recover a weapon
