It is dawn when Mel wakes up, because she always wakes up at that time. The curtains are shut, so currently she doesn't see the first rays of the sun. Which is a good thing.
She yawns, and if anybody were awake (Cornelius is still asleep - he doesn't have to wake up at this time, but Mel does because it's part of her training) they would see shining white teeth, and two sharp fangs. Mel isn't aware of those yet. Or her red eyes.
She trots downstairs after getting dressed, and by then the sun is up a little. She isn't in the sunlight, but she's near it. And then she passes through a shaft of sunlight.
And Melinda screams.
