I just watched Emergency Vets on Animal Planet. I don't know why I watch these shows, they always make me cry (yes, I'm kind of sensitive to animals in pain).
Anyways, the episode involved the most adorable little yellow lab puppy who just wasn't growing like she should, she kept regurgitating her food and the owner couldn't figure it out, so she brought her to the vets. It turned out to be a deformity in the esophagus that basically made it so the food would just sit in her esophagus and she'd eventually throw it up.
So they did surgery, fixed it, but found another problem that they wouldn't have been able to see in the first surgery. So they went in and, although fixed the problem, the fact that she was regurgitating her food her whole short life inevitable caused permanent damage to her esophagus. She eventually died from this problem, but during the second surgery they nearly lost her. Her heart stopped beating and it took them awhile to fix it. Regardless, the little tiny puppy woke up wagging her tail and being the most loveable thing you've ever seen. She wasn't phased at all. So when they found that even though they fixed the deformities in her GI tract, she still had irreversible damage that made it impossible to eat, everyone started crying.
It made me really sad.
