Don't turn your head back, they instructed, so that when you're near the surface from below the earth's crust, your beloved won't turn into an ogre or be spirited away back into the depths of the underworld. Keep your eyes pinned to the view in front of you and not to the landscapes you pass as you ascend further to the top.
What they neglected to mention, however, was that the road bends imperceptibly, creating changes in direction that generate a backwards perspective that cannot be ignored. And so the rhythms of the now, the delegated tasks for the moment slip to the wayside, replaced with what was left behind. Music that plays with a hypnotic bassline, reawakening senses that you'd assumed went into a coma.
And now there is nothing else to do but dance and bend and crave for the same sights and sounds that once filled you with such gratitude.
