I'm discussing some points you brought up over at whydoesljcensor here, too.
Before MySpace provided data to state attorney generals, they did nothing more than Six Apart -- on the surface, anyway. They suspended accounts they thought belonged to registered sex offenders. Unlike Six Apart, though, MySpace verified the suspensions through their Sentinel SAFE data; they didn't do it based on the hunches of a group like Warriors For Innocence.
Six Apart's suspensions couldn't have been compared to Sentinel SAFE type data, or there wouldn't have been so many erroneous suspensions. Also, as I keep saying to make myself extra-unpopular, we have no proof ANY of the Six Apart suspensions were of sex predators. Thanks to WfI and Six Apart going off half-cocked, no one probably ever will.
It's possible, though, Six Apart thought they were doing the same thing MySpace had, or at least that it would be perceived that way by the public, so they would get praise and back-pats.
Any decision Six Apart makes will ultimately be based on profit, yep. I agree.
Regardless of what Six Apart does in the near future, I've concluded their customer service is mind-bogglingly terrible, and I don't want to give them any more money. Insane Journal is looking good to me.

*nod* I don't feel it was so bad a few years ago. But now (& especially right now) I've got nothing but complaints. And I really am starting to self-loathe myself for the whining.
Today I had an interesting theoretical discussion which put some of this into interesting perspective. If you want to read:
