"What is that?"
"It's an EMF meter. It reads electromagnetic frequencies."
"I know what an EMF is. But why does that one look like a busted-up walkman?"
"Because thats what I made it out of. It's homemade."
"Yeah, I can see that."

"Why does this look familiar?" Sam wonders out loud.

"Because it was yours, dumbass," Dean answers without looking at him.

Sam is instantly swimming in memories thick with age and melted around the edge.

He was sitting in the backseat of the Impala. He always sat in the back wearing his taped-up headphones. It was easier.
John was yelling. He'd been yelling at Sam more than usual recently, though. Never was sure why, either.
Maybe Sam looked more like Mom than he used to. Which didn't make sense. Dean looked like Mom. Almost-blonde hair and big green eyes. Sam looked like John on his most stubborn day.

He leaned against the window and tried not to think about it. Metallica was playing. Sam wasn't sure what song was what (Dean had tried to school him), but it was loud, and it was drowning. The tape he recorded from the radio earlier had gotten old.
Sam bounced with the motion of the road--his cheek scrunching up on the window pane, his hair slick and sliding. He didn't get to wash his hair that day as John had dragged them, first light and bleary, from Carthage, Missouri.
Driving from one nowhere town to another noname place. Always moving. Always.

Sam listened to the bass line and ignored the rising voices. He closed his eyes, let the motion move him farther into his mind.

One day...one day there will be time for settling down.
Somewhere with a name and a history. Somewhere that would want Sam.

John was yelling, Dean was mediating and Sam..
...Sam was waiting long on a train that didn't come.

The old walkman/new EMF gives every indication of something happening. When Sam looks back at Dean to tell him so, what comes out of his mouth is: "You kept this? Even after..."

Dean acts like he doesn't really have time for this discussion and just returns, "Well you didn't have any use for it anymore, didya?"

Sam remembers the exact day he tossed that walkman onto the bed and told Dean to have at it because it wasn't working anyway.

Nothing keeps John out.
Nothing holds Sam back.

He smiles as he wonders what else Dean's kept that once belonged to Sam.
