Well it's been too long again...
Steve and I are officially getting old. I have my first wrinkle on the corner of my mouth and Steve has 2 WHITE hairs on his head!
We way relived memories though at Josh Petrie's wedding....they played O Canada by Five Iron Frenzy at the reception and Josh, Tim (Steve's brother), Jeff Soulierre, Chris Cross and I were all skanking it up. Geez I haven't done that in 7 years! Steve just shook his head at us haha. At least THAT made me FEEL young haha.
I have also decidedly become a foodie, a food elitist or what have you. I have read the book Nourishing Traditions by Sally A. Fallon...100 times...a day..haha seriously- this is the nutritional philosophy that makes the most sense to me. Traditional foods...a diet based on thousands of years of tradition and proven good health vs. fads like Atkins or not to step on toes...but a popular one that has NOT been practiced for more than a century besides a few (noteably unhealthy) people groups: vegetarian/veganism....diets which have NOT been proven over thousands of years.
In addition to the widely accepted embrace of organic produce, grains and legumes and the use of extra-virgin olive oil..also the embrace of animal products which have nourished people for thousands of years: free range pastured (grass-fed) meat and organ meats, raw (unpastureized) milk and dairy products (including good old fashioned butter), free-range eggs, wild-caught fish, home-made stocks, coconut oil and traditional oddities like kombucha, kvass, kefir, cod liver oil and fermented vegetables (kimchi, etc).
Also the idea that our bodies NEED saturated fat (it is key in hormonal function..and cholesterol an important element of brain function): animal products, coconut, etc (NOT to be confused with man made trans-fats: margarine, the fat in most packaged products and even a component of the newly touted as healthy canola oil)...healthy people with low rates of heart disease include people who eat more saturated fat than Americans even (remember the difference between saturated and trans fats): the French, Scandinavians, the traditional Eskimo diet, etc. People I have been talking with actually LOSE fat eating good fat (and Steve and I haven't gained weight though we go through a stick of high quality butter per week/ 2 TBLSP a day each).
So in addition to cringing walking into regular grocery stores...I find myself doing things that most girls my age don't do...like make chicken stock from scratch every week. We are also looking at investing in a 5 cubic foot freezer and ordering 1/10th of a pastured (grass-fed) cow and a whole lamb...which will last us a year. By the way...why do Americans insist on primarily eating beef, not lamb? Pastured beef is around $7/lb...while pastured lamb is only $3.25/lb. I mean, this was probably the primary source of meat for Jesus Himself hehe. Anyways... also found a little organic farm in Sky Valley of all places that offers a big box of local, organic produce for $25/wk. I'm gonna get a tour of the place next week and hopefully sign up for that stuff.
Oh yeah by the way....my terrible adult acne I have had for nearly 4 years has finally FULLY cleared up. Yeah. Haven't changed my facial care routine either. I also feel great. I think this is tell-tale of this way of eating.
So there you have it- and update on my new hobby. For more info I highly recommend the book Nourishing Traditions by Sally A. Fallon and visiting the website www.westonaprice.org.
