Seconds later, Iron Man burst from a cloud bank, Thor on his heels, and the two of them spiral into a hole in the roof. "Okay, Big Guy, you go left. I'll go right," Stark tells the Thunderer and starts his thrusters again as he buzzes passed fleeing people and right into an office being closed in upon by doombots. Tony takes them out easily before he turns to help the people out that had gotten trapped.

The battle is a long one. The other Avengers arrive and they manage to battle back Doom before too long and then split up to look for injured. It's really only luck that Tony is the one to come on Steve and he freaks out, throwing debris everywhere. "Rogers! Oh God, open your damned eyes!"

Steve lay on his front under several pieces of debris. Tonys voice garnered no visual reaction from him.

This is not the first time that Tony has carried the man, but it's still different. More emotional. He gently lifts off the debris in case any of it is laying against anything vital and then dashes Steve off of the ground against his chest. "I swear to God Steve, you hang on."

This time, Steve didn't hold on to Tony. There was no grip, or pressing close.

No one is allowed to touch Steve. Tony won't put him down until they're at the hospital and even then, he almost goes into surgery with him.

The doctors all but force him to put Steve down before they take him into surgery. The surgeons keeping in there for a few hours,

[ooc: its almost like steve likes having tony waiting outside a medical room for him, lol.]

Tony isn't there when Steve wakes up. They won't let him in the ICU. It's killing him. Just that is killing him. None of the other Avengers show up this time. They follow orders when Fury says that Steve is out.

So it's Tony that's there when a nurse comes to tell him that Steve is away. Tony slips into his room silently, eyes lost.

Steve lay asleep on the bed, cuts & bruises on the visible skin. He looked almost nothing like the super soldier Captain America people knew him as.

It's heart breaking. Tony moves closer to the bed. They'd been through so much recently and... His hands stay in his pockets. He'll just wait.

It was an hour & a half later when Steves eyes slowly opened & he let out a slow sigh.

Tony's moved to a seat by then. One dragged into the corner. He's been dozing a bit himself but when Steve stirs, his eyes fly open.

"Hey."

"Tony?" He asked quietly, groaning as he tried to move.

He flies out of his chair and pushes Steve gently back down. "Stay still. You're so damned stubborn."

Steves face screws up slightly as he led back down. He then looked up Tony, a little breathless from the movement. "You were right."

"Yeah, sometimes it happens," he murmurs. "I'm not even going to ask what you were doing."

"I thought I could do something to stop him..." Steve said, putting his head back on the pillow. "I am useless & pathetic."
