I just bought my very first chainsaw this afternoon. I've always kind of wanted one, but it had come to the point where I had no choice. Five or six or seven years ago, I had made an attempt to remove one of the smaller White Oaks from my yard. I got most of it down with hand saws, but reached a point about 10 feet up where I needed a chainsaw to finish the job.
Time passed, the tree regrew, and this year I was at the point where it was a little to big for me to take down by myself. So I got busy taking it down anyways. Now, I am at that point again that calls for a chainsaw.
This thing is about 35-40 feet high, but because of the earlier trimming most of the limbs aren't that thick. There were three large sections splitting off the main trunk and last Saturday Jackie helped me take down the smallest of them. I tied a rope from my Explorer's tow bar to the limb and had Jackie give it a little gas to direct the limb as it fell. If it had gone the other way, I would have taken out some power lines, so she had an important job.
I used an electric reciprocating saw on the limb and it took forever to get through it. Talk about not using the right tool for the job. I threw in the towel after that one until I could get the right tool. Now that day has come. I've just been playing around with it, cutting up some of the stuff I fell earlier. I'm hoping tomorrow is the day the rest of the tree comes down.
In case anyone is wondering why I am felling a perfectly beautiful tree, this particular specimen is just one of a number that I have. It came up on its own near a Maple tree and another White Oak that I had carefully transplanted in that spot. I had always meant to give to to someone when it got a little bigger, but never found any takers. Unfortunately, it is in sort of a bad spot with the power lines and all.
